I updated my android to 4.4.2...  Then updated Avare to the latest version..   10.0.8, I think.  Now I cannot get passed the registration page.  It says it's registering, but nothing happens.

The backend server that handles registering needed to be upgraded to support the encryption protocols used by the weather provider.  This had the unfortunate effect of causing the older Android OS not to be able to connect.

We will have to look to see if the older (insecure) encryption protocols can be enabled on the server.

Hello Rick
We had to upgrade the server as Leidos flight filing was not working with it. That made the older ssl protocols obsolete and your device won't work. It's possible to still make it work if you can compile the code for your device by disabling registration.  However flight filing will not work.

I just purchased a new Galaxy S6 lite tablet, running Android 11.  I cannot get past the registration tab either.  I had borrowed a Galaxy Tab A and it was working.  For giggles, I uninstalled the program and tried to reinstall it.  Now it won't work.  I was running Android 8.  My Pixel 6 Pro works.  I don't dare uninstall it, for fear it will stop working, too.  So I don't think it's just old versions of android.

Yes, this is ridiculous, isn't it!?  If you upgrade, than it doesn't work anymore.  What kind of "progress" is that?  I'm very upset that my 10 inch Tab3 doesn't work anymore.  It's not that old!  I would recommend to all that haven't upgraded their android system, or upgraded Avare, DON'T DO IT..  Stay with what you have, or you won't have anything, and you'll have to buy a new device.  How long with the new stuff continue to work?  One year?  Two years?

I suspect that, if you had the knowledge to go back to a previous version of Android, and an older version of Avare, you could get it to work, but I have been unable to do that.

The problem is on the backend server not with the tablets, and assists to only effect new registrations and filling of flight plans.

The backend server that handles the registrations and flight plan submissions had to be upgraded due to the encryption requirements of the upstream provider Ledios which the old server was incapable of doing.

I suspect either something did not upgrade properly or some additional configuration needs to be completed.  Hopefully we can get this resolved very quickly.

Hello Rick.
We are bound by OS restrictions. Let us help you get your tab 3 working.
Jeff, we can looking into relaxing the security on the server for backward compatibility?

Yes Jeff, I understand that.  Android is owned by Google, and Google would love to make us all buy new devices.  Maybe a new one every year?  I'm sick of this programmed obsolescence.  I hate Apple just as much as Google, but I might have to go to an Ipad so I can have reliable aviation device.

Foreflight will not run on an old ipad device. Even if it did it will not be a good experience. Apple is worse. Go ahead try it and let us know. You are welcome back anytime no questions asked :)

It's a falsehood that google makes money selling devices. They make money selling ads.
Apple instead makes money selling device.

Hi.

That is a very narrow look at how G works.

While it is true that G makes most of their money from advertising, they also make and sell devices, and they would be broke now / never made it, without devices, be it computers, in the older days or presently with the tablets where they have total control over the AOS.

Their income from devices, Play store, a couple of years ago was around $17B.

They are stealing your information using the devices, search engine..., and they sell it to the advertisers by matching the individual's stolen private information, with the advertisers.

I would be interested on how one thinks that G can do business without the Devices?

Devices are the conduit to getting your information to sell, without them their profit / earnings would make them a no company, even this day and age, when they have some diversification, but without them they would not be around.

Again G made it by stealing your personal information, matching it to advertisers and using devices that they have total control over to accomplish that, with complete disregard to people's privacy or people in general.

Does anyone for a second think that they give out the AOS just to lose money and or not profit from the devices that use it?  TV

While not for the timid willing to surrender without a fight, there's
LineageOS. I found it quite simple and non-techie to replace the
obsolete and *very* annoying KindleOS on Amazon's $50 new 10" on sale a
couple of years ago. It's a bit of hassle for the wife, since I didn't
put any gStuff on it but it's dazzling and fast strapped to my thigh in
flight. The real estate on that screen, unlike "Location..." in
buildings, is about readability. Maybe those of us annoyed with Google
could put together HowTo guides for a couple of good inexpensive Avare
device options.

> They are stealing your information

If only Apple, Amazon, FaceBook ... didn't do that too. For me, the
very Best thing about Avare is that it's Free Open Source Software. For
people, by people. "FOSS" is one of the few Human things still
surviving in the world today. Down side is we need to be creative and
work together - oh wait, that's an Up side. ;D

Thank you, Apps4Av!
