RPi 3 Stratux with Bluetooth GPS?

I finally built a Stratux using the Raspberry Pi 3 (WiFi & Bluetooth are built-in).  I also have a Bluetooth GPS puck that I've always paired with my Nexus 7 for reliable position, so I didn't get a USB GPS for the Stratux.  The arrangement works if I have the tablet's Bluetooth and WiFi both turned on and connected to the GPS & Stratux respectively.

But is it possible to pair the GPS to the Stratux for position data?  My aim is to use only the tablet's WiFi and get the GPS data through the Stratux to reduce the power drain on the tablet.  I can find no Bluetooth options on the Stratux interface.  Does anyone know if this is possible and/or how to do it?

Sure- AVARE app- preferences /GPS / GPS Position Source / either All available or Avare IO Module Only- 

That's assuming you are using the "avare external IO Module" app to connect avare to Stratux.using the Bluetooth or Wifi (4000)

Stratux output is only available through WiFi.  I can connect to it with Avare using the Avare IO Module as you suggest but the Stratux alone has no GPS position data to send to Avare.  Avare gets the FIS-B & TIS-B just fine with this arrangement since GPS is optional for Stratux.

I want to know if/how I can first pair & connect the GPS via Bluetooth directly to the Stratux, then use only the tablet's WiFi to get the TIS-B, FIS-B and GPS data all from Stratux as the single WiFi source.  If a Bluetooth GPS can't be paired to a Stratux, I'll either buy a USB GPS to connect to the Stratux, or continue to pair the Bluetooth GPS with to the tablet.

This may be a question for a Stratux specific forum but I thought I'd check here first.

Basically what you need is  to use WiFi and confirm that you have the proper port selected 4000, you do not need Bluetooth. TV


About Stratux, in particular, there seem to be multiple variations of hardware being used, different versions of PI boards, some have WiFi built in, like the PI 3 B, some use the dongle.
Make sure that you get the latest code for the particular version board that you have. CYoung? and there may be others that contributed  their efforts to provide the Free software are doing their best to keep the code updated / in sync with the latest hardware versions.
I will try to do my best to describe the PI 3 B that has a built in WiFi, this will work for other versions if you have the WiFi dongle.
If you have a device that is assembled, you must:
1-In your Tablet / receiving device, make sure WiFi is ON.
2-Start your Stratux and wait until your device is booted up, Green LED starts to blink, or about 1min.
3-In your Tablet, Connections>WiFi, make sure that you see  Stratux and get it Connected, Do Not proceed beyond this point unless you have that satisfied. Note: If you are close to another WiFi source / Modem etc. you may not see the Startux, move to a different location.
4-Start Avare, enable GPS and confirm that  you do not see the " No GPS Signal", you can also verify at least 3 Green Satellites in Tools.
5-In Menu Preferences Weather>Use ADSB Weather selected.
6-Create a Flight Plan in the area, may not be needed.
7-Send Avare to background, do not exit, Home key.
8-Sart Avare IO, version 4.0.2 or later.
9-From the top Down arrow, select WiFi, verify that port 4000 is entered, and select Listen. At this point you should see data streaming below, if not go back and verify WiFi still connected... I observed many WiFi connections drop offs  when near other sources.
10-Restart Avare and be patient, you may not see any Wx, unless you are in the vicinity of transmitting stations on the ground, but should work above 3000 Ft., and if you are close to the airport you should see some traffic,Blue dots.

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I checked the board and it's a Pi model 3-B V1.2 2015. Still no WiFi connection. I've even put the Pi software Micro SD card back in and still no connection to the WiFi.

I had same issue with Pi3 not creating a network. I had to reformat the SD card and then the WIFI network came up.

Hi Mark.
WiFi and Tablet connection has nothing to do with Avare, you Must resolve that first.
 I found out that if you are close to other WiFi sources the Stratux will get disconnected, and others will take over. Make sure you get your Sttratux connected, if you have to you can temporarily disable your other WiFi sources.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions I'm going to take the Raspberry Pi and the tablet down to the hangar where there's no other WiFi source and try it there.
