Hello,

I tried using Cloud Ahoy (CA) with a KML file generated from Avare and ran into issues with the import function.  I contacted the CA team and they explained that the format generated by Avare is not the typical format where the needed data for tracks (time stamp, bearing, speed, etc) are saved as point labels and not as "readable" data.  CA has their own software for logging the flight data but that would require an additional app running at the same time as Avare and I would imagine more battery consumption as a result.

Would it be possible to have the KML file be generated in a slightly different format as to provide all the data that's already collected in a way that could be imported into CA?  They provided me with a KML file (attached) with the data from a vendor (I think Bad Elf) that they can import.

Thanks,
Freddie

Forwarding to Ron for check and code change. It's definitely a good change. Thanks

Hi Freddie.
We've gone through a couple of different configurations / versions of .kml and the present version is compatible with most of the apps on the market.
Making changes to the present format will only make other apps, that use this format, obsolete.
The format you uploaded is Not compatible with TrackMaker and likely other apps. TV

I understand about not wanting to change formats that work with a lot of apps.  Would it be possible to test out a new format to see how those apps behave?  Or maybe offer the user which format to use as a preference in the app, that way we can have more than one format, maybe even offer a CSV version?  Or maybe have a tool to convert between formats?

The Cloud Ahoy rep was open to create a translator for the Avare KML format if a lot of users wanted it.  I'm not sure how many Avare users use CA but if there are many of us using 2 apps to get this data, I think there's a better way to do it.

Thanks!
Freddie

Hi Freddie.
I can confirm that the present format Avare uses, is compatible with All the apps, at least the ones I have, in Windows, and Google....
The format you posted does Not work with the Windows apps / progs.
At one point Ron tried other formats and many users had problems. Having a Converter, outside Avare, would be a good idea if the CA staff wants to create one. All the data required is available in the Avare format, just the sequence is different and you may be able to create an app to easily convert it?
I am not sure where  you are trying to display it, but if it's Windows there is Free app called TrackMaker that does a good job and is backwards compatible with many Serial / Com devices presently being used by Universities, Hikers... TV

Hi TV,

I'm trying to use it on Cloud Ahoy (https://www.cloudahoy.com/).  Not sure if you're familiar with it but they do a great job at taking the flight data and generating an in depth analysis of the flight which is really useful for any rating.  I do have TrackMaker and Google Earth and use them for displaying the Avare data.  I used TrackMaker to create a GPX file but much of the data is in a comment field and not usable in that format for analysis.  I wish I could create an app for this but that's out of my wheelhouse.

The file I uploaded was one generated by Bad Elf. They have several others formats that may work on all Windows apps (see attached).

I still think there's a lot of value to using only one app for data logging.  I don't have a clue as to the number of Avare users that use Cloud Ahoy and it would be great if CA created the converter on their end but is it possible to also explore on this end having the ability to create different format KML files?

Thanks!
Freddie
