Not really an Avare discussion persay, but since I'm sure many here are android users......

Hunting a tablet is insane.  I'm looking at a Tab A, Tab E, and a Tab 4.   (the E was 9.6", which might be good for my not so good detailed-near sightedness)

But, which one is better?   Will any NOT work with Avare and Stratux?  What's the difference between any of them?  Will they run FltPlan Go as well without issues?

I've looked at refurbished Ipads, but....the reviews seem HORRIBLE.  but then again, tons of android tablets are horrible too.  Sigh.

Hi David.
Of the ones you mentioned I have Tab A, and Tab 4  7 in. Tab 4 is brighter otherwise they are about equal, Tab E I would stay away from it had less Storage and RAM to begin with, at least the 7 In that I am familiar with, do. TV

You probably know, but I want to clarify for any nebies that Avare isn't
available for any iStuff including iPads.

As for which tablet, I'm not aware of any Samsung Tabs it doesn't work
with. Still runs (well, sort of a fast walk) on my 2012 1st gen Nexus 7
last time I checked a couple of months ago. If you go w/larger than 8"
I presume you've already tried one or used a cardboard cutout to see how
(if) it will fit into your cockpit w/o obscuring anything. My Tab 8
barely fits on my 172Q yoke mount, and I doubt anything bigger would
work for my 6'2" panel sight picture.

This probably sounds crazy, but I've given up on tablets in my cockpit, and I've tried.
Just too big.
I just use my Pixel XL and have it Velcro'd to the panel.

Oh that's just nuts!

Yes, I'm kidding. ;)

I often fly with just my tiny old Samsung S7 phone. Massive improvement
on a panel 430. Sometimes I've imagined all the different devices and
mounting strategies Avarees are using.

I have been using a 2013 (2nd Gen) Nexus 7 since day one. It has NEVER failed on a flight. It will hold GPS lock anywhere I place it in the cockpit using only its internal sensor.

Mine is Nexus 7 2012/first gen....7 inch tablet, also never failed in flight though have had one or two incidents with updates on the ground. Avare uninstall/reinstall cured that. The nexus is velcro ed to a plastic frame with a velcro strap thru the frame going around my left thigh  just up from knee...strapped on my right thigh, is my 2000 Lowrance 1000, 4 or 5 inch rectangular B W screen dedicated gps...data base about 2004 so obviously don't trust for freqs and similar info but it still is a great dedicated nav gps and has a many screens with one emulating a B767 panel...towards waist from the Lowrance is my standard VFR knee board with checklists in plastic pages also strapped around leg. My aircraft is a tiny single seat Midget Mustang experimental with a btwn the knees floor mounted stick and throttle quad on left side fuselage.  I also strap in using a 5 point tie down harness with 3 inch NHRA  drag racing straps   ...i'll wager the cockpit is smaller than 98% of others'...and all works just fine though set up time is a little longer than most and things are a little confined but hey once in I not going anywhere.....As I have zero attitude and nav aid instruments I like the two gps s...the Lowrance is hardwired with batt backup...the Nexus is batt only..... if I can make two tablets and a kneeboard work in that dinky cockpit then anyone can use a tablet. Regards, Roger

I first used a Nexus 2 until it died. After research I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Has a great screen and has worked well. Fit in the center of the york very well. The tab A's are good, but the Tab S has better specs and screen.

I bought both the smaller and the larger Tab S2. Big one was just way too big, but the smaller one is definitely a step up from using my phone. Picked both up cheap on OfferUp.

I love my 8" galaxy tab S2. It works great with stratux and does not block the view of my old steam gauges. It is also very light and easily mounted using a blank plate on my panel.

When responding to a question about approach plate readability (two
years ago), I wrote a lengthy post about hardware selection.  I submit
that post gives the best "general" guidance on selecting hardware.  The
advice was supported by technical arguments.

One technical difference is our current plates ship at 1860 vertical
pixels (minus trimmed empty margin).  (a 50% linear increase in density
over the density at the time).  The aspect ratio is still the same so
that guidance still applies.
