Random thoughts after Crypto 2012...
1. Crypto attendance was clearly somewhat down this year (271 names on
the attendance list, rumors of ~340 total), but should be up again next
year when CHES returns to Santa Barbara. See
http://cr.yp.to/talks/2010.08.19-1/slides.pdf
for evidence of the CHES impact, especially slide 6. This also means
that more people will be around to run, and attend, applied events.
2. Several Crypto PC members said that there were very few applied
submissions. Does this mean that applied cryptographers have been aiming
almost everything at CHES, ignoring Crypto? Should we make an effort to
split early-2013 submissions between Crypto and CHES?
3. The lack of trays in De La Guerra for the last few years has clearly
been reducing the time available for discussions---people who arrive
with a briefcase in one hand and a mug in the other are forced to make
several trips back and forth. Sure, it's only a few minutes lost per
person per meal, but we wouldn't tolerate that sort of inefficiency in
the rump session. We've been kicking around the idea of a tray as a
conference gift, maybe some sort of folding tray for easy packing.
4. Tanja mentioned that the beach barbecue felt too short. I checked
some older schedules and found the following:
Crypto 2000: talks -16:35, IACR 16:40-17:40, barbecue 18:00-21:00
Crypto 2001: talks -16:35, IACR 16:40-17:40, barbecue 18:00-21:00
Crypto 2002: talks -17:05, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:30
Crypto 2003: talks -17:00, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:30
Crypto 2004: talks -17:00, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:30
Crypto 2005: talks -17:00, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:15
Crypto 2006: talks -17:00, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:15
Crypto 2007: talks -17:00, IACR 17:05-17:50, barbecue 18:00-20:15
Crypto 2008: talks -16:35, IACR 16:40-17:40, barbecue 18:00-20:15
Crypto 2009: talks -17:15, IACR 17:15-18:00, barbecue 18:00-20:15
Crypto 2010: talks -17:10, IACR 17:15-18:00, barbecue 18:00-20:00
Crypto 2011: talks -17:10, IACR 17:10-18:00, barbecue 18:00-20:00
Crypto 2012: talks -16:50, IACR 16:50-17:40, barbecue 18:00-20:00
The IACR meeting this year didn't actually end until 18:00. The Crypto
2000/2001 schedule looks much more reasonable, with enough time to get
to the barbecue by 18:00 and then three full hours at the barbecue.
