Hello ADI!
Hope you’re making it through midterms. We have a couple of exciting events coming up. Note our newly announced “Intro to Startups” event on 11/10. Come learn about the companies going to the job fair and hear first hand what it’s like working at a startup!
Also, we’re making an effort to record our workshops. If you missed our intro to Python, we have a video up here!
1. Intermediate Python: The Useful Things Tuesday, 11/1, 9–10 pm in Hamilton 503 We can't teach everyone everything about Python in an hour, but we'll get pretty far in this 2nd introductory workshop. Python tries to make life easy for programmers, but the only way to really take advantage of it is to know most of the tools at your disposal, like dictionaries, keyword arguments, list comprehensions and more. We'll be covering how and when to wield these language features, as well as various topics good Pythonistas should know.
Presumes basic knowledge of Python. Check out the intro to Python lecture here if you missed it.
2. Hacker Office Hours Tuesday, 11/1, 10–11 pm in Lerner 569 Come with anything you want to hack on! If you want help with a technology, come and get help on your project from people who are more experienced, or if you're already experienced, come share your knowledge and find collaborators!
3. iOS Workshop #4 Wednesday, 11/2, 9:15–10:30 pm in Hamilton 516 Learn about Table Views and Tab Bars, two heavily-used tools in iOS development to organize your app. This lecture, building upon protocols and delegates, will give you the tools and understanding to implement tables and tab bars in your application, while navigating freely through as many views as you'd like.
Missed any of the workshops? Check out the previous lectures here.
(Note: iOS development can only be done on machines running Mac OS X.)
4. Intro to Startups Thursday, 11/10, 7–8 pm in the CS Lounge(through the metal doors on the ground floor of Mudd) Learn about what it’s like to work at a startup and hear about the startups coming to the job fair. We’ll have other students who interned at startups talk about their experiences. This is your best chance to get inside information of what it’s like to work at each company and know which ones to target at the job fair the following day.
5. Startup Career Fair Friday, 11/11, 1:30–4:30 pm in Lerner 555 ADI is hosting a career fair just for student developers on campus and tech startups in NYC. The event will be a casual, t-shirt-and-jeans, no-suit event catered to developers and the startups where they all want to work. (Plus, we hear there will be swag.) Companies attending include: Tumblr, Nodejitsu, SecondMarket, 10gen, and Vimeo. Check out the job fair webpagefor more info. Please RSVP here.
OTHER UPDATES
1. ACM Mentorship Program Although projects aren't mandatory, ACM’s mentorship program this year will be project-oriented this year. We think that the best way to learn CS is by developing software, so we’ll help participants work on projects either in pairs or small groups.
Don’t worry about your experience level; if you’re a novice, seasoned hacker, or anything in-between, we’ll help you find an appropriate project. If you're interested in CS but don't have the time to work on a project and want to talk to a mentor about what classes to take, what skills to learn, etc., you can also join the program without working on a project.
If you think you might be interested in joining the program, please fill out this form. We'll start forming groups as we get responses and will hold a kickoff event soon.
