Greetings Patella, ADI!

ADI is feeling stuffed from Thanksgiving (only vegan Turducken for us this year!), but excited for the final push.  We are putting the last touches on our personal turkey projects, and hoping to see some exciting hacks from you guys this holiday season!

From our great HackCU team comes a blog post to solve your multiple identity crisis when it it comes to online communication. “Thanks to the forward-thinking people at Google, there is still hope for keeping your online correspondence straight, provided you use Gmail exclusively. There’s a convenient way to be logged into multiple Gmail accounts at once and switch between them at leisure.  …“  Read more here.

Anyway, we also hope you guys are making room and losing that weight to fit in our next big event, TechCulture, happening this Saturday!  Please like our new Facebook page, and follow us on Twitter @adi_cu!

ADI EVENTS

1. Intermediate Python - Punching Objects
Tuesday 11/29, 9-10pm in Hamilton 503
During this 3rd-in-series Python workshop we'll be tackling object oriented programming, which is another way of saying we'll be making our own types, which sounds boring but is actually pretty cool and underlies many fantastic Python libraries. Along with objects, we'll be talking about exception handling.

Note: ducks will be punched.

Presumes basic knowledge of Python.

2. Hacker Office Hours
Tuesday, 11/29, 10–11 pm in Lerner 569
Come with anything you want to hack on! If you want help with a technology, come and get help on your project from people who are more experienced, or if you're already experienced, come share your knowledge and find collaborators!

3. ADI Holiday Party
Thursday, 12/1, 8:30–11:30 pm in the CS Lounge
Come out and join ADI for drinks, deserts, talk tech, and meet Columbia alums working in startups! We'll have egg nog, apple cider, cake, cookies, and pastries to set the mood at this great opportunity to meet our members, upperclassmen, and Columbia alumni to talk about startups, programming, how to get involved in Columbia's fast growing developer community, or anything else you're interested in!

We'd love to answer any questions you have about classes and discuss the benefits of making a hobby or major out of computers. You'll also learn about our upcoming tech workshops where we teach you programming languages, how to setup a website and much more!

Better yet, with the holidays approaching, but finals in the way, we're here to have a good time. Everyone's welcome to attend! Bring a friend and we'll see you there! Check out the Facebook Event Page.

4. TechCulture
Saturday, 12/3, 11am–3 pm in the CS Lounge
The age old question remains, what do you get when you mix free food with open source software?  One word: TechCulture.  Come if you want to be fed, and learn about some open source initiations what they are, how to get involved, and how to use them? Come to TechCulture, where James Socol, a developer from Mozilla will introduce you to the open source community, we'll help you get set up with Linux, and help you learn how you can take advantage of open source technology on campus.

4. Interdisciplinary Panel on New Developments in Health-Care IT
Wednesday, 12/7, 8-9 pm, Location TBD
CUAMSA, Columbia Economics Review, Columbia Economics Society, along with two other business school student groups and ADI have teamed up together in an effort to bring together an impressive panel that will discuss emerging and groundbreaking developments in Health-care IT. Mailman Professors in Department of Health Policy & Management, a professor in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Program at the Business School and a professor from the Biomedical Informatics Department, along with a panelist form ZocDoc and perhaps a venture capital firm with a strong portfolio in the healthcare IT space will be present to discuss current industry trends and developments in Healthcare IT.  A portion of the talk will geared toward pointing interested students to ways to get involved in the space.

3. Apply for HackNY Fellowship
The hackNY Fellows program is an intense 10 week program designed to introduce students to NYC’s startup ecosystem by pairing the best technical minds with great New York startups. Local startups are carefully selected for the program and have demonstrated evidence of a mentoring environment, committing to:
(i) a specific person (CTO, lead dev, or other technical mentor) to work with the Fellow;
(ii) a specific place allocated for the Fellow to work; and
(iii) a specific technical problem for the Fellow to conquer during the program.

The hackNY Fellows program is a paid summer internship program at NYC startups, which provides free housing as well as a pedagogical lecture series covering all aspects of founding or joining a tech startup. The 2012 class will be the third year of hackNY Fellows. Previous fellows have come from all over the US and Canada, majoring in a variety of subjects. The key criterion for eligibility is ability to code and enjoyment of building.

Applications will be considered as they are received at http://hackny.org/a/students/.  For fullest consideration students should apply before 11:59 PM NYC time December 31 2011.  For a brief introduction to the program, please see this video created by the class of 2011 hackNY Fellows http://bit.ly/hackNY2011vid.

Pleasantly Plump,
ADI Board
