Hello ADI!

Here's the events for the week!

Events and Updates:
1. iOS Workshop #2, Monday 10/17
2. Intermediate Python Workshop, Tuesday 10/18
3. Hacker Office Hours, Tuesday 10/18
4. CVC Speed Networking, Wednesday 10/19
5. Foursquare Tech Talk, Wednesday, 10/19
6. ADI Alumni Dinner, Thursday 10/20
7. Columbia Pitchfest, Friday 10/21

1. iOS Workshop #2

Monday, 10/17, 9-10pm in Hamilton 516

Learn the Foundation Framework, the framework on which all objects in Objective-C/Cocoa are built, and the task of Memory Management within Objective-C. This lecture, along with the previous one, will provide the foundation for the majority of the course, as you begin to understand the relationship between objects within Cocoa. (Note: iOS development can only be done on machines running Mac OS X)

2. Intermediate Python Workshop

Tuesday, 10/18, 9-10pm in Hamilton 503

We can't teach everyone everything about Python in an hour, but we'll get pretty far in this 2nd introductory workshop. Python tries to make life easy for programmers, but the only way to really take advantage of it is to know most of the tools at your disposal, like dictionaries, keyword arguments, list comprehensions and more. We'll be covering how and when to wield these language features, as well as various topics any good Pythonista should know. Presumes basic knowledge of Python (quick! What does print(["Hello", 1]) do?), next week covers object oriented Python.

3. Hacker Office Hours

Tuesday, 10/18, 10-11pm in Lerner 569

Come with anything you want to hack on! If you want help with a technology, come and get help on your project from people who are more experienced, or if you're already experienced, come to share your knowledge and find collaborators!

4. CVC Speed Networking

Wednesday, 10/19, 6:30-8:15pm in Barnard Hall, Sulzberger Parlor

CVC is all about meeting new people and building a community. But meeting people can be tedious and almost always inefficient. How many times do you attend a great event but wish you met more people? Or you ended up talking to one person the whole time? CVC Speed Networking changes all that. Our promise: Within an hour, a room of strangers will turn into a room of familiar faces.

Plus, it comes with a twist. This isn't your typical speed-anything with musical chairs and a gong. No, we'll be using an app called Cnvrge (cnvrge.com) and run everything using the miracle of text messaging. It'll make intros for you - like the world's greatest party host.
This is a totally new way to network, so come with a fully charged cell phone (that can accept text messages) and an open mind!

5. Foursquare Tech Talk

Wednesday, 10/19, 7:30-8:30pm in the Interschool Lab (750 CEPSR)

Harry Heymann, the lead engineer at foursquare, will discuss foursquare's use of the scala programming language. Scala is an innovative language that melds ideas from both object oriented and functional paradigms. Using it has allowed foursquare to produce better features faster and with fewer defects (while having more fun!) than older programming languages would allow. Come join us to learn all about it!

6. Alumni Dinner

October 20th, 8-10pm in the CS Lounge

Come join ADI and have dinner with several Columbia alums working in startups around NYC. It's a great chance to meet really cool people and get a taste of what the real world is like! Come eat with us at 8PM, on campus. Participation is limited to 30 seats, so sign up quickly. There will be a waitlist. Participants must be undergraduates, currently enrolled at Columbia, with a strong interest or background in Application Development. Sign up here.

7. Columbia Pitchfest

Friday, 10/21, 12-3:00pm in 417 IAB

Would you like feedback and funding opportunities for your invention?  Do you have a new business idea? Are you looking for partners in your next venture? Application Deadline: 10/17/2011 Midnight. Email Columbia...@gmail.com to register. Apply for the 2011 Columbia University Pitchfest!
