The requirements for the original Nestopia were considered higher than some of its contemporaries such as Stella.[3] To run an optimal emulation, the program requires a minimum 800 MHz processor. Its high requirement is due to its accurate emulation of the NES hardware. The emulator will play most ROMs and has a strong port for the Apple Macintosh.[4][self-published source?]

The original Nestopia allowed customization of colors, sounds, and graphics. It includes special features such as Power Glove.[3] Brandon Widdler of Digital Trends considers the emulator one of the best for the NES, though he admits that it has fewer features than its rival FCEUX.[5]

Nestopia was originally developed for Windows by Martin Freij. Richard Bannister and R. Belmont later ported it to Mac OS X and Linux, respectively.[6] Original development ended in 2008,[7] but forked into Nestopia UE.[8]

Did some searching online and on this forum and not finding anything that will help. When I run a game via GameEx using Nestopia for NES games, there is no sound at all when in the game. There is sound as I scroll through the games in GameEx but nothing once a game is entered to be played. Any ideas where to start?

I tried playing them through Nestopia outside of GameEx but when I do that, all I get is a black screen . I'm assuming there should be some sort of menu bar in Nestopia but it's not there. Tried Googling that and didn't find anything that told me how to "turn on" the menu bar so I couldn't fully explore that avenue.

To toggle between window and full screen in Nestopia, hit Alt-Enter. You will also find a setting in Nestopia under Options > Preferences for switching to full screen when the emulator launches once you have everything set to your liking.

As far a the lack of sound, in Nestopia under Options > Sound, perhaps your (sound) Device is set incorrectly. Windows 10 also can also at times have some wonkiness with sound settings and programs which may require some tweaking and investigation.

Thanks Red Dog. Both you're suggestions led me to be able to resolve the issue. I was able to exit full-screen to get the menu bar and then went into Options>Sound and found no sound device was selected. Once I selected it, sound worked both in Nestopia and via GameEx. so problem solved! Again, thanks so much for your help.

hello all, i have a weird issue with launchbox. I am trying to setup Nestopia with my nes rom collection but in launchbox when i double click a game, the emulator opens but nothing happens after that, i have to go through the nestopia menu to launch a rom, can anyone tell me how to get the emulator to auto launch the selected rom in launchbox?

You most likely either have your associated platforms set incorrectly for the emulator or you haven't changed the emulator for your games which you need to do with the bulk edit tool because Nestopia works perfectly fine with Launchbox.

I have this same issue as described. I am able to open games outside of Launchbox but but error loading in Launchbox. I have my associated platform set to Nintendo Entertainment System and the correct emulator selected "Nestopia". It in fact loads nestopia and then the error occurs, File not found!

Not related to the issue you're having, but I thought I'd bring to your attention in case you were not aware, but there are much better NES emulators out there when compared to Nestopia (as far as functionality and accuracy). The top two that come to mind are puNES ( =6928) and Mesen ( for stand-alone or for info on the retroarch/libretro core)... with Mesen being my suggestion to go with for NES emulation. I believe puNES does not have a retroarch core, but Mesen does. Both of these do have stand-alone emulators though, if that's what you prefer. Anyway, I figured I'd bring this to your attention, as you might want to switch to a more accurate emulator and try and get that working rather than continuing to try to get Nestopia working (which again is not a bad emulator, there are just better ones out there now)

so after fiddling around within launchbox, I have found our solution for nestopia to work. go to the launchbox menu >tools>manage emulators, double click the nestopia line and on that window make sure "Extract ROM archives before running" is checked. click ok then close and you're ready to run nes games on nestopia from launchbox or bigbox

I am trying GameEx and like it but have a problem with NEStopia emulator. The settings for emulator path and so on are correct, I can see the games but when I select to play one I get taken to a black screen displaying jut the time and date and then nothing works and I have to physically switch off my pc to do anything.

I am running it in an arcade cab with XP pro SP2, 1 GB DDR RAM, AMD Athlon 64 2800+ CPU, NVIDIA AGP GF 6200 with joysticks and buttons connected via a keyboard encoder interface if this helps with any ideas.

I had the same problem, you have to change the video settings from inside nestopia. Open it up from outside of GameEx and go into the options to change it so that it starts up in full screen, and then change the resolutions under video settings till you have a resolution you like on your TV/monitor

I'm reading in other online forums but not this one that the whole Nestopia folder has to be extracted. Is this true in regards to Launchbox or do you know what the problem is? And how do I go in there and edit the emulator for every Nintendo game? Is there a quick way to do it or do I have to now do every game individually or would it be easier to delete everything and start over and how. Is there just a way to change the emulator on each game would this be better?

Thank you for your fast response @lordmonkus. You know Nintendo was the first one I tried installing. I usually use another emulator for Nintendo and it works fine. I just tried clicking on Nestopia and it gives me the same error. Nestopia is the one recommended for Nintendo in Launchbox. Can I use the other one and how do I change it? Do I have to change it on every Nintendo game/ROM Note: I just tried installing Super Nintendo games and it wouldn't let me choose a whole folder so I think I may have missed the answer in another forum about this issue. So I chose the emulator file only again (not a zip folder I know better then that). It's installing Super Nintendo as we speak I'll see what happens. Yes I did extract the files. So can I change emulator on the Nintendo ones? Is there another forum or video link you have on this to save you time? Thanks, Greg

Setup the emulator you want to use in Launchox in the manage emulators window. Then select all your Nintendo games in Launchbox using Control + A, right click any game with them all selected and then Edit. This will open the bulk edit tool and you can change the emulator for every game quickly and easily with it.

The quickest way I found to import games from a folder is to simply to go the folder containing all the roms and then select all the rom files and drag them into Launchbox, this will start the import process.

@lordmonkus So I don't choose emulator to change it on? What do I choose? all it's only giving me two options. It only gives me Nintendo/Nestopia and the Super Nintendo Emulator I am working on on the value options?

When trying to enable a save state or at least access that menu, for some reason, I cannot. I had been playing Super Mario Bros 2 and it was playing fine then and now, but I cannot remember how to pull up the nestopia menu bar. If it's supposed to show automatically, it isn't. Have no idea what to do to resolve this. I've googled, you tubed and looked at this site and others and am not finding out why the menu bar is gone. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.
