Hello everyone.

My name is Ruzhang Zheng, an undergraduated student in Computer Science from ZJU, China. The reason why I want to become a programmer is that I really liked playing video games in my childhood. And now I focus more on improving my programming skill of rendering. Now I work for State Key Lab of CAD&CG of ZJU, and in the team I am responsible for the job to implement real-time effect for our  lab's engine. I have finish a demo which reproduce an effect of stochastic screen space reflection with C++ and OpenGL and now I try to integrate it into our engine.

Actually, my knowledge about rendering are most related to real-time application. As for realistic rendering, in my view, it is a really big treasure that I always want to learn about it. So this may be a great chance for me to extend my skill and test myself for participating in such an interesting project.

To be honest, I have no idea of open source and I didn't take part in any open source project. But in my opinion, open source promotes the development of a variety of technologies a lot. Taking rendering as an example,  KlayGE (Klay Game Engine) is a powerful open source rendering engine which has implement almost all the advanced technologies, which helps a lot for the junior programmers like me to read and learn.

I know appleseed because of GSoC 2017. When I decided to get myself into applying for GSoC, I find that appleseed's projects attract me a lot, as it show us a clearly target and specifies the tasks that we need to finish. More importantly, the result rendered by appleseed looks pretty cool :)

I am quite interested in the Project 4 and 5. For project 4, volume rendering is an awesome feature which can enhance the performance a lot. Because like smoke or fog play an important role in expressing the atmosphere of the scene. For project 5, I have no idea how to adaptive sample in the image, but I learned and used importance sampling before as once I needed to pre-calculate the sampling result first and it requested the technology of importance sampling. So I am willing to try it for challenge.

Thanks for your reading! I hope that I can join in appleseed in GSoC and exercise myself in the project.

( And I am trying my best to fulfil the requirements of the application before the deadline...

Hello,

Thanks for your interest in appleseed!

Regarding applying to this year's GSoC, I'm afraid it is a bit too late, but feel free to join us on Slack (invite sent) if you're interested in meeting the community and contributing to the project!

Franz
