Hi Jino,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

I sent you a slack invitation for our group.

Here's our application guide, in case you didn't see it.

Thanks!

Est.

Hello!
My name is Udyan Khurana. I'm from New Delhi, India and I would like to take part in GSoC 2017 under appleseed. Right now I'm doing my MS by Research in IIIT-Hyderabad in the area of Computer Graphics and Rendering. Rendering Engines seem very interesting to me, and as part of my research, I'm making my own rendering engine to simulate optical effects like defocus blur using light-field concepts, and putting it on the GPU for faster results.

I'm a bit new to open-source projects. I have not done much coding with guidelines and am not very familiar with code reviews. But I am eager to learn, and collaborate with others. GSoC seems like the ideal opportunity to do just that.
I have never personally used or worked on appleseed, but I've seen it in action and I found it very interesting, which is why I wanted to try participating in GSoC.
I'm good at C/C++ and python languages. I have also used STL before. I am also familiar with git and svn, though not very fluent.
As far as renderers go, I have used Blender for modeling and rendering few scenes, and PoVRay. For a previous project, I have also attempted to code in new BVHs and primitives in the PBRT and PoVRay ray tracers.

I had heard about appleseed 2 yrs ago or so from a friend who recommended it when I needed to test out curve rendering primitives and algorithms.
From the Project Ideas, I'm interested in Project #4 and #9. #9 is something that I have tried to do a bit in the past. I understand it would mean create support for new shapes/primitives from the ground up, but I think I can do it. #4 I like because I wanted to try out volume rendering approaches, although I know it would be bit hard to try all this inside a full-fledged framework. It would help me broaden my knowledge base in rendering techniques also, which I'll need to further my research also, as a side benefit.
I would be interested to contribute to appleseed after the summer also, and maybe take up responsibility for some part of the code.

Thanks for reading!

Hello Udyann!

Thanks for your nice intro and for your interest in appleseed.

Regarding applying to this year's GSoC, I'm afraid it is a bit too late, but feel free to join us on Slack (invite sent) if you're interested in meeting the community and contributing to the project!

Franz
