Good afternoon, AppleSeed-dev members.

Introduction:
My name is Michael Natalevich, and I'm pursing a Bachelor degree in CS at Belarusian State University (Minsk, Belarus).  I'm a successful olympiad participant, and won a silver medal at International Olympiad in Informatics 2016. That's why I enjoy problems about optimization, improving quality and creating effective, complicated algorithms.

About Appleseed and GSoC:
I've heard about GSoC just few days ago from friends at the university. AppleSeed caught my attention immediately, and I would like to work with you and contribute very much. I'm new to rendering, and now I'm reading a lot about it, because I find it extremely interesting. In fact, now I would enjoy to write a renderer myself.

Coding background:
Having implemented lots of algorithms at various olympiads, I feel confident using C++ (STL in particular), and GitHub. I've also got a project on OpenCL about finding edges in the picture. Unfortunately, I haven't contributed to open source projects yet.

AppleSeed projects:
I would appreciate a chance to work on one of projects 5, 7, and 19, because they require (I hope) deep analysis and interesting ideas.

Questions:
What concepts should I know to potentially work on some of these projects?

Thank you in advance,
Michael Natalevich.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your interest in appleseed!

I'm afraid it's a bit too late to apply to GSoC with our organization this year (our application process is fairly involved) but we would be happy if you would join us on Slack and meet the community, and if you're interested, contribute to the project.

Just sent you a Slack invite.

Franz

Thank you for a reply!

Could you please send some sources to get started with ray tracing or rendering techniques in general (maybe work you were inspired by to start AppleSeed)?

And maybe it's not too late yet to try to solve the application task? I became somewhat passionate about AppleSeed :)

With great respect,
Michael Natalevich.

If you're interested in ray tracing and (non real time) rendering in general, the very best source of information is the book Physically Based Rendering: http://www.pbrt.org/. It's not cheap but it's worth every penny as it's the most complete and in-depth reference you'll find on the topic.

Another good (and free) resource online is https://www.scratchapixel.com/. It's a very good introduction to many topics.
