This occurs because there are 2 products that can be updated from Appium.app. There is appium (the nodeJS module, which Jonathan revved to 0.4.0 yesterday) and there is Appium.app which currently sits at 1.6.3. I'd always recommend updating the .app first, otherwise you may have to redo the other update.

Appium.app is just the graphical user interface used to control appium the nodeJS package. Updating the .app will give you UI upgrades, upgrading the node package will give you functionality upgrades.

Not sure why this is happening, but a stack trace would be useful. You should be able to get one from Console.app

I am going to release a new version of Appium.app today to adjust for the preference changes Jonathan made yesterday. :ater today you will be able to download it with the update.

This was a bug that started reproing with appium 0.4.0, it has to do with changes that were made to how instruments without delay is built. Despite the crash, it was correctly upgrading appium.

The bug has been fixed in the new version

Doesn't really matter.

1.6.4 includes .0.5.0 so upgrading the .app is quicker

I believe you want to run `npm update -g appium`, assuming you installed it globally. If not, omit the -g.
