setvalue/text vs sendKeys

In the above discussion Jonathan mentioned to use setText/setValue instead of sendKeys.

setValue or setText -- is this part of javaclient library?  where is it defined for us to use?

as far as I read it in GIt is the status that setText is removed and that sendKeys will be improved (concerning performance).
