On iOS, the user can designate a website to be a home screen app, thereby creating a "bookmark" on their main iOS home screen that starts the website in Safari when they click the bookmark. There are some behaviors of Safari that are slightly different when a website is run in this way.

Is there a way to use Appium to test a "home screen" wesite such as this rather than he normal approach of directly using Safari against a URL?

Unfortunately, no. Home screen bookmarks are not apps, and Appium can only test (a) apps that you have dev access to and can install via instruments, and (b) built-in Apple apps (sim-only)
