If you've done something clever with the admin UI I'd like to see some
screenshots to help influence a colleague to go with Apostrophe.

The main issue with using Apostrophe is that my colleague does not
like the way the admin buttons clutter up the page when signed in as
an admin.
I suspect that this may be partly due to my implementation. So I was
hoping I could get a bigger picture by seeing what other people are
doing.

Have you shown him the preview function on the hosted version?

So in other words he prefers a separate admin interface. I never have understood this...

However it would be fairly simple to add a button that uses javascript to hide all the admin buttons, then puts them back when he needs to edit.

Yup, the classes to do that are all in place, the preview button we
have in the product isn't in the plugin at the moment but it's a
handful of lines of javascript, really not a big deal to reproduce.

A smart & reasonable Her with a different, but valuable, point of view actually, but lets not let that hijack the discussion.

Contextual editing is not so much the issue, it's the size and placement of the buttons.

I was hoping people have experimented with things like show on hover, different sizes, clever ways to edit status messages like "Your Profile has been updated"

We both like the preview button, I was thinking about hacking on that a bit.

The places I've had the contextual editing break down are:
  1. small pieces of content, where the content is smaller than the editing buttons
  2. status messages
  3. things like pricing grids... can't show the client's but we based it off 37 signals http://basecamphq.com/signup
I don't think this is a problem unique to apostrophe

I REALLY like the may Multiple languages and content versioning is handled so that's something I will highlight.

What I'm fighting against is http://expressionengine.com/showcase, it's a touch friendlier than a list in trac ;)

Ouch... it hurts because it's true (:

Creating an interface like this for apostrophe would not be difficult. at the very least for the hosted sites. Request each to upload a screen shot if the site which you store in the table with the site info. Then tit ciudad flash certain ones as featured to make then display on a featured page. To complement the trac list, not replace it.
