Slow startup of APL+Win session

Greetings!  I just (finally) joined this group.

I recently purchased APL+Win version 15.1.01 (the latest available retiree version).  The most recent version I had used previously was 8.2, so there are lots of new goodies to try out.  One issue I'm having is startup time when running aplw.exe.  With version 8.2., aplw.exe loaded in a split second.  With 15.1.01, it takes about 2.5 seconds.  It's especially noticeable when I start multiple APLW.WSEngine server sessions, with each one taking about 2.5 seconds to initiate.

I've run Microsoft's Process Monitor to see what registry and file system events are occurring when starting aplw.  One thing I noticed are rather large gaps between some successive events timestamps (relatively speaking -- hundreds of milliseconds rather than the usual microseconds), but they add up.  But there's nothing obvious in what event was occurring before the gap that would clue me in as to what the issue is.

I thought perhaps there might be some issue in loading certain required DLLs or OCXs that are in the same directory as aplw.exe, but I can't pinpoint anything.

I'm running under Windows 10 Pro (v10.0.19044), on a Dell XPS 8930 with Intel Core i7-8700 CPU 6-core, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, so there's nothing about that that would account for the slowness.

Has anyone else here seen this, and have any idea what could be going on?  Or is this now normal for the later versions of APL+Win?

Thanks for any help.  / Rav

Sadly, this is the new normal.  The licensing software that APL2000 uses is causes the delay.  Very annoying.

The only good news is that the runtime version (aplwr.exe) loads quickly, because it does not require a license.

Thanks, Rex.  That would be good news (to me) -- except that the retiree version of APL+Win specifically doesn't come with a runtime version!  Oh well.  At least now that I understand what the issue is I can certainly live with it.

What is the retiree version?

Hi, Don.  APL2000 provides  an older version of APL+Win (15.1 currently) at the reduced price of $500 to X-STSCers (and I assume X-Manugisticers and X-APL2000ers, and I don't know possibly who else).  It does not come with a runtime executable, there is no support from APL2000, and you do not get access to their forums (APLDN).  It's for non-commercial use only.  You get no updates.  It does include the manuals electronically.  There is a license agreement to sign.  I asked, and they did say that "the retiree license is also perpetual use."  If you're interested, contact Sonia Beekman (sonia.beekman@[7{rotate}'lap'][(-48)+2*11].com).
