*The main objective of **this workshop is to equip librarians with:*

1. New skills on content development that are crucial for providing the
need based library services to the users.
2. Desired techniques so that they can develop the customer centric
library services.
3. Marketing and promotional acumen for effective delivery of library
services.
4. The necessary skills to develop the team and to make the library as a
vibrant place.

I invite you to participate in this workshop. Since maximum 50
participants will be registered on a first come-first served basis, an
early registration will certainly ensure your place in the participation
list.

Please find attached a brochure on the same for your ready reference. For

GUIDE - 6 tips to keep Facebook secureand privateGothundreds of Facebook friends? Make sure they only see what you want them to  Nowis a good time to do some digital cleanup, while the year is still fresh.Review your secu rity and privacy set tings, and make sure casual acquaintancesyou met once aren't still getting the most intimate details of your life. Getrid of games and apps that might have latched onto your account years ago, butthat you no longer use. Here are six cleanup tips:
SECURE YOUR ACCOUNT
You've doubtless heard youshould have a strong password. It's especially important for email andsocial-networking accounts because so much of your digital life revolves aroundthem. Plus, many other services let you log on using your Facebook account, soif that gets compromised, so will your other accounts.
Because pass words are toughto manage, it's best not to rely solely on them.Turn on what Facebook callsLogin Approvals. It's in the account settings under “Security.“After you do so, you're askedfor confirmation a special number sent to your phone when signing on from anew device.
Unless you switch devicesoften, this is something you set up once and forget about.

REVIEW YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS
Facebook offers a series ofquick privacy “shortcuts.“ On desktops and laptops, look for the small padlockon the upper right corner. On Apple and Android devices, access shortcutsthrough the menu the three horizontal bars.
The key shortcut is “Who cansee my stuff ?“ See whether you've been inadvertently broadcast ing yourmusings to all of Fa cebook. You'll probably want to at least limit shar ing to“Friends“ rather than “Public,“ though you can customise that further toexclude certain individu als or groups such as co workers, or grandparents. When sharing, less is more. While you're at it, check“Timeline and Tagging“ in your account settings. You can insist on approvingposts that people tag you in. Note that this is limited to what appears on yourpersonal timeline; if Mary tags you in a post, Mary's friends will still see itregardless of your settings.
If you're on a desktop orlaptop, Facebook has a Privacy Checkup tool to review your settings. Look forthat padlock. This tool is coming soon to mobile.

UNFRIEND AWAY
Purge friends you're nolonger in touch with. If you think “unfriending“ is too mean, add them to an“Acquaintances“ or “Restricted“ list. “Acquaintances“ means they won't show upin your news feed often, though they'll still have full access to any posts youdistribute to your friends. “Restricted“ means they'll only see posts you markas public.Either is effectively a way to unfriend someone without dropping anyclues you've done so.
You can also create customlists, such as “college friends“ or “family.“ This is great for oversharingwith those who'll appreciate it, while not annoying everyone else and puttingyourself in danger of becoming an “acquaintance“ yourself. You can create listson a traditional PC by hitting “More“ next to “Friends“ to the left of your feed.Individuals can be in multiple groups. Capabilities are limited on mobile, although changes you make on the PC will appear on your phone or tablet.

WATCH THOSE APPS
Perhaps someone invited youto play a game a few years ago. You tried it and moved on, yet the app is stillgetting access to your data.Or perhaps you've used Facebook to log onto aservice you no longer use.
The Privacy Checkup tool onPCs will review apps for you automatically. On mobile devices, look for “Apps“in the account settings (not “Apps“ in the main menu).A related option is theSecurity Checkup tool. It's an easy way to log out of Facebook on devices yourarely use. You can also enable alerts when someone tries to sign on from a newdevice or browser. To run this, go to http: facebook.comsecuritycheckup on aPC. On the Android app, search for “security checkup“ in the Help Centre. OniOS, you'll have to find the options individually in the account settings under“Security.“

CONTROL YOUR DATA
You can exert some influenceover whose posts you see more or less often by going to “News FeedsPreferences.“ The setting is on the top right on browsers and Android apps andon the lower right on iPhones. Here, you can select friends who'll always showup on top, or hide someone's posts completely.
If you're worried about datausage, you can stop videos from playing automatically. On Android, go to“Autoplay“ in the “App Settings.“ On iPhone, it's in the account settings under“Videos and Photos.“

PLAN AHEAD

Two settings might eliminategrief later in life ... or death. In the security settings, you can designatecertain friends as trusted contacts. They'll have power to help you if you getlocked out of your account. You can also designate a “Legacy Contact“ afamily member or close friend who'd serve as your administrator should you, um,make your last status update (as in, ever). They won't be able to post on yourbehalf or see your messages, but they'll be able to respond to new friendrequests and take a few additional actions on your deceased behalf. How the Humble Index Card Foresaw theInternet
A 3 x 5 history ofthe cards that helped catalog all of human knowledge in a way anybodycould use.
Index cards are mostly obsolete nowadays. Weuse them to create flash cards, write recipes, and occasionally fold them up into cool paper airplanes. But theiroriginal purpose was nothing less than organizing and classifying every knownanimal, plant, and mineral in the world. Later, they formed the backbone of thelibrary system, allowing us to index vast sums of information and inadvertentlycreating many of the underlying ideas that allowed the Internet to flourish.
The Invention
Organizing more than 12,000 animals, plants, and minerals is painstaking work. Imagine having to do it by hand, let alonetyping it all into Microsoft Excel.

Weeding out is like cleaning the garden and keeping the weeds aside. Here
the unwanted library material is kept aside till the decision on the same
is taken.
Withdrawal is withdrawing and taking the books out of collection. Here the
processes of weeding out, passing the material for withdrawal in lib
committee and procedure of writing off the books is already taken place.
After stock taking, the list of the books lost and price collected, missing
books for 3 consequetive years are listed with their price and passed in
the library committee as allowed to be not accounted or lost forever from
the library. This is writing off. After the material is written off, it can
be withdrawn forever from the library.

‘Unused mobile library a wasteof funds’
A former senate member of theUniversity of Mumbai has criticised the varsity’s proposal to invest in anaircraft for a new course in aviation while its previous investments aregathering dust. The former member has said a mobile library van purchased andinaugurated in 2014 amid much fanfare has been lying unused at the Fort campusfor the past eight months. He alleged that it was a waste of university fundsas well as disservice to the intended beneficiaries and said the van should bemade functional at the earliest.
Sanjay Wairal, former senatemember, said officials were guilty of squandering funds that belonged to thestudents. “The van was purchased by the university to provide access to studymaterial, videos and presentations to students living in mofussul areas. Whileinitially the van visited far-off areas in Thane, Raigad and Sindhudurg, it hasbeen lying unused at the Fort campus since the past eight to nine months. Theuniversity wants to be progressive, but at what cost? A lot of money wasinvested in modifying the van to provide learning on the go, but all that isnow being laid to waste,” said Mr Wairal.

He added that the absence ofa full-fledged senate, management and academic council was the reason officialscould get away with such an irresponsible behaviour. The fully air-conditioned vanis installed with five computers, an LCD projector, a 130-inch plasma screen, among other facilities.

The van also has books inEnglish, Hindi and Marathi, e-books, journals and previous question papers ofvarious subjects being offered by the university.

When asked about the same, DrManali Londhe, director, department of students welfare, which is responsiblefor the van, said the van was not being sent on visits for various reasons butthe service would start soon. “The van was not being used during the monsoonand later the exams started, hence it was not sent out. However, ourdepartment, in consultation with the university authorities, is drawing up anew timetable for the van and it will start visiting the rural areas onceagain,” said Dr Londhe.Source | Asian Age | 22February 2016Regards Pralhad JadhavSenior LibrarianKhaitan & Co Upcoming Event | One Day Seminar-cum-workshop on “QuickResponse (QR) Code: Applications in Library Information & ScienceServices” on 12thMarch, 2016 @ AIKTC New Panvel.

Performingcolleges to get 3-year approval
Ina bid to make engineering colleges improve their standards and performance, theAll India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced that approvalfor three years will be given to performing colleges.

Apartfrom this, the Council has also said that those colleges that merit thethree-year approval will also benefit from waiver of approval fees for theperiod. Until now, colleges had to apply for approval from the Council everyyear and pay a hefty fee for the same. The announcement was made during the allIndia approval workshop being conducted by the Council at Bengaluru on Sunday.

Accordingto officials from AICTE, the Council is conducting a nationwide workshop forclearing the misconceptions and address related to the approval process.

“Aspart of the same, around 4,000 university and college officials will be giventraining for which the Council is conducting a master trainer programme atBengaluru,” said the official. Under the master trainer programme, around 40officials from all over India — including nine from Maharashtra — were invitedfor the programme on Sunday. From Mumbai, Dr M.A. Khan, registrar, Universityof Mumbai and Dr P.H. Sawant, principal of Sardar Patel College of Engineering, were also invited for the workshop.

Throwinglight on the need for giving the three year approval at one go, the AICTEofficial said, “Engineering colleges have to keep evolving and improving theirperformance, hence they have to get an approval from the Council every year. However, there are some colleges that have a good track record, have maintainedhigh standards and have a good performance. Such colleges will be granted athree-year approval and the fee will also be waived off,” said the official. Headded that the only criteria they require is an autonomous status and validaccreditation for a year from the time they apply for the three-year approval.

Theapproval process is a lengthy one as colleges have to fill up a 120-page formavailable online on the AICTE website. The form asks for minute details of thecollege including infrastructure, academics, course details and student intakeamong others. Good performing colleges are those that have compliance in almostall fields and hence do not require annual approval. The Council official saidthe same would be effective from the next academic year.

How canuniversities best optimize digital signage?

Dive Brief:

- Digital signs have powerful implications for colleges and universities that want to offer fresh, modern displays while also tracking student engagement, and a number of best practices can ensure institutions get it right.
- Campus Technology reports that the University of Michigan has found that marketing and IT collaboration creates the most effective digital signs, but important questions should be asked before signs go up — like whether users should be able to scroll through events or get more information by interacting with the sign, whether the sign looks touchable, and whether information should be made portable with a QR code.
- Additionally, all font, images, text alignment, and touchable elements on digital signs should be accessible and live data should be used to offer real-time content on digital signs — or, when it’s not, attention should be paid to keeping the content up-to-date.

Dive Insight:
One key piece of advice fromthe University of Michigan is to track results. Like virtually every newinitiative on campus, administrators should be thinking about data. Digitalsigns offer opportunities to track student engagement and collect feedbackthrough surveys. Levels of interaction can be analyzed to better determine whatkind of sign content seems most popular in a given location. There is no end tothe processes that can be improved with data analysis, and in many cases, the datais already being collected somewhere, it just needs to be parsed.

Colleges and universitieshave latched onto the idea of data analytics most consistently when it comes tostudent performance, where early-warning systemsand other interventions can improve retention. Pulling together data from astudent information system and learning management system is just the beginning. Many schools now add data from library and tutoring center check-ins and otherparts of campus — data that exists in systems somewhere, but needs to be linkedfor predictive power. WikipediaTakes on Google With New 'Transparent' Search Engine
Onlineencyclopedia Wikipedia has launched a $2.5 million program to build “theInternet’s first transparent search engine.”
WikimediaDiscovery, originally known as the Knowledge Engine, is being developedinitially through funds granted to Wikipedia’s parent organization, theWikimedia Foundation, and takes direct aim at major search engines like Google.
Wikimedia’sapplication for a $250,000 grant from the Knight Foundationstates: “Commercial search engines dominate search-engine use of the Internet, and they’re employing proprietary technologies to consolidate channels ofaccess to the Internet’s knowledge and information.”
Thenew search engine does not aim to immediately replace Google as a generalpurpose search engine, according to the foundation, as it will only draw oninformation from Wikipedia and its other free knowledge projects. Eventually,it is hoped that other sources of open knowledge could be incorporated, such asthe U.S. Census Bureau.
WikimediaDiscovery aims to provide a “system for discovering reliable and trustworthypublic information on the Internet.” The grant highlights criticalfeatures to help achieve this, including no advertising, protected userprivacy, and open data access to metadata that would give users the exact datasource of their information.

Inapproving the grant, Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibargüen said in aletter to Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Lila Tretikov: “The grant isto be used...to advance new models for finding information by supporting stageone development of the Knowledge Engine by Wikipedia, a system for discoveringreliable and trustworthy public information on the Internet.”
Wikipediafounder Jimmy Wales previously attempted to build a search engine in 2009.The Wikia project was eventually abandoned due to a lack of success.
Ina blogpost at the time, Wales said: “I will return again and again in my careerto search, either as an investor, a contributor, a donor, or a cheerleader.”Source | http://www.newsweek.com/wikipedia-takes-google-new-transparent-search-engine-427028Regards Pralhad JadhavSenior LibrarianKhaitan & Co UpcomingEvent | One Day Seminar-cum-workshop on “Quick Response (QR) Code:Applications in Library Information & Science Services” on 12thMarch,2016 @ AIKTC New Panvel.

DearAll

Oneof our Senior LIS Professional has been covered in below mentioned pressrelease.

Name of LIS Professional | Arati Desai (Librarian at the Nehru Centre)

Reinventing the library

Book loversare finding welcoming new havens around the city
Ceiling high shelves full of dusty,leather-bound tomes, stern librarians glaring at you over their spectacles ifyou so much as whisper in the sepulchral silence… Is that your idea of whatlibraries are?

How about bright, well-designed, evenlandscaped spaces that encourage socialization?

Sneha Vashisht, a zoology graduate student atthe University of Mumbai, says she spent her last three weekends reading books, each time at a different informal reading space. “I enjoy these colourful, cozyspaces that have a garden-like ambience and a casual feel with bean bags andcoffee, as opposed to dusty, damp and poorly-lit libraries.” Ms Vashisht callsthese spaces “book havens” and they’re a delightful trend in a city that’sincreasingly in a hurry. These new takes on libraries are designed to offerrelaxation and entertainment by making reading a highly rewarding activity. There are no penalties and late fees, and nobody would raise an eyebrow if youbring that mug of coffee inside the premises.

Some will even offer you coffee. Like LeapingWindows at Versova, a 250-square-foot enclosure specialising in comic books, with a café as a plus. In Lower Parel, Trilogy’s 2100 sq ft space is a‘curated’ library with 7500 books, a bookstore, and also a literary eventsspace. Just Books, a library chain with outlets across the island city, and inNerul and Thane offers, over 5 lakh books across varied genres and enablesreaders to use technology in the form of RFID tags to issue, return, search forand request books. The Hive in Bandra attracts the literary-minded with books, book clubs and storytelling sessions.

In Leaping Windows, readers can lounge andsip coffee as they read from a wide collection of graphic novels and comics forRs 50 an hour, which includes Wi Fi. “Comics/ graphic novels are very expensiveto buy and aren’t as widely available in India,” says Bidisha Basu, who runsthe place. “As a result, the readership and awareness of comics also remainssmall. We wanted to give people the opportunity to read as much as they want, for a fixed price. A library was the obvious answer.”

Ahalya and Meethil Momaya, the husband andwife duo who founded Trilogy last year, say that a library has to be a warm andfriendly place. Trilogy is a circulating library which is membership based, andwith unlimited reading plans. The more you read, the more you gain.
Just Books has a few chairs and setteesplaced artfully around; members sit and browse in quiet, encouraged to treat thespace as their own. It also conducts workshops, mainly for children, increative writing, story-writing and essay-writing, which are “very popular”according to Bhanumati Ganesh, the franchise owner for the Nerul and Thanebranches. Taking a cue from these new spaces, older, established libraries, such as the one in Worli’s Nehru Centre, are changing.Arati Desai, a librarian at the Nehru Centre, says “It is time for libraries toevolve from reading spaces to social spaces, since all traditional librariesare facing the threat of decreasing footfalls, due to the increasing digitalpenetration in every sector. Only those libraries that can deal with thischallenge will survive. We have tried to encourage community participation inour new space so that a constant stream of readers is always there.” She saysshe has brought in a “comfortable environment and ergonomically-designedfurniture inside a beautifully landscaped reading room” that encourages peopleto spend time in the library.
Ishant Manekar, a chartered accountant and anindependent cartoonist, enjoys working out of the Nehru Centre library on somedays and heads to Trilogy on the weekends where he can sink into books from avariety of genres. “I’m not an avid reader at all and have always dreadedentering a library,” he says. “But these places are so soothing, cozy andinviting that I’ve started enjoying the company of books.”
Nehru Centre has also begun conductingworkshops, book discussions, meet-the-author sessions, creative writinglectures and seminars, and has also revamped the physical space, with researchcubicles for scholars separated from the general reading area, and it now hasextended its ‘working’ week, staying open on alternate Saturdays. As Ms Desaissays, “Today libraries are no longer about restrictions and controls.”

Google Revamps Desktop Search, Now No Ads OnThe Right Side
Googling has become a way of our lives.Google is one of the most used websites that we access tens of times in a day. Many of you might also not like several text ads that appear on the GoogleSearch results page on the right side. Well, this is about to change soon.
Google is about to roll out major updates toits desktop search page and will do away with the right-side ads.Presently, when you fire a query on Google Search, you will be presented 3ads above the search results, and 8 ads on the right side as shownin screenshot below.
Googleis about to replace these right side ads with 4 ads above the search results(it limited to 3 ads currently) and/or a few ads below the search results. Many sources have reported that Google has already rolled out the new DesktopSearch update in their region.

Google IsLooking For More Advertiser Revenue
Google has seen in a decline in its adsrevenue recently, and that’s why they want the advertisers to bid aggressivelyfor the 4 ad slots above the search results instead of 8 ads on the right side. This will results in increased cost-per-click (CPC) for the advertisersand hence will increase Google’s ad revenue.
Google mentions that this new layout is intesting for a quite some time now, with very few people seeing it in action. The company also mentions that this layout is tweaked for “highly commercialqueries” where the users will get much more relevant results which in turnwould lead to better campaigns for the advertisers.
“We’ve been testing this layout for a longtime, so some people might see it on a very small number of commercial queries. We’ll continue to make tweaks, but this is designed for highly commercialqueries where the layout is able to provide more relevant results for peoplesearching and better performance for advertisers,” said Google’s officialstatement.Google also confirmed that this change isrolling out to all Google websites in local languages around the globe. However, this no ads on the right comes with 2 exceptions:

- Google will still continue to show Product Listing Ad (PLA) Boxes which appear either above or to the right of the search results.
- Ads will still be shown in the knowledge panel.

Google mentions that this new update bringsthe Google Desktop Search much closer to the mobile search which is what Googlehas been trying to do since the past couple of years.
Since I was unable to check the new update inaction on either Google.com or Google.co.in, I tried Google.co.uk and I wasgreeted with new search results update. Check out the screenshot below andwitness the future of Google’s Desktop Search results.
