TheAP Biology Exam will test your understanding of the biological concepts covered in the course units, as well as your ability to utilize the scientific method and analyze data. You are allowed to use a four-function calculator (with square root), scientific, or graphing functions throughout exam.

With a passing grade on the Advanced Standing Exam (ASE), you will receive credit for 7.012 Introductory Biology and will fulfill the Biology GIR. The ASE is offered twice each year: once before the beginning of fall semester and once before the beginning of spring semester. The ASE is offered only for the Biology GIR and not for any other biology courses.

The ASE is intended for first-year students. However, you may petition to take the ASE after your first year if you have never registered for or attended a 7.01x class, and if you have never attended the exam before.

If you take the ASE July/August and receive a grade of C or better, you will receive the grade P for 7.012. This grade will be posted to your fall term record and will appear on your transcript. If you receive a grade of D or F on the exam, no record will be kept of your non-passing performance.

Transfer students who did not take Introductory Biology at their previous university and who wish to take the ASE may do so. If you choose to take the ASE during orientation you do not need to petition. A petition will be required to take the ASE after your first semester at MIT. A letter grade of A through F will be recorded and will appear on your transcript but will not be included in the calculation of your term or cumulative GPA.

Transfer students who have taken Biology courses at their previous university can seek transfer credit. You may be required to pass the GIR Validation Exam in order to receive Bio GIR credit. Learn More.

Incoming first-year students are required to register using the ASE registration form for the fall exam (found in the orientation package), or to submit a petition and register using this online form for the spring exam. Upperclassmen are required to submit a petition and to register using this online form.

The ASE is a mix of multiple choice, check box, text response, and longer response answers. You will have three hours to take the exam. The content of the exam is largely focused on core material covered in all 7.01X classes, including:

Biochemistry

The Biology exam covers material that is usually taught in a one-year college general biology course. The subject matter tested covers the broad field of the biological sciences, organized into three major areas: molecular and cellular biology, organismal biology, and population biology.

The exam gives approximately equal weight to these three areas. The exam contains approximately 115 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Some of these are pretest questions that will not be scored.

Note: Each institution reserves the right to set its own credit-granting policy, which may differ from the American Council on Education (ACE). Contact your college to find out the score required for credit and the number of credit hours granted.

The Biology Placement Exam is an online tool used to place students in an introductory biology course that is appropriate for their background, to maximize their chances of success. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions and may only be attempted 2 times. Students will have 60 minutes to complete the exam. A score of 30 or higher will qualify students to enroll in Biology 2120, pending seat availability. If you score below 30 on your second attempt, of if you score below 30 on your first attempt and do not retake the exam, then you will be eligible to enroll in BIOL 1110. You need a B or better in BIOL 1110 to move on to BIOL 2120.

The Biology Placement Exam is given through Canvas which students may access using their NinerNet username and password. Once logged in to Canvas, students will access the exam using the access code: biology.

Please note that taking the Biology Placement Exam does not guarantee a seat in BIOL 1110 or BIOL 2120. Scoring 30 or above on the exam: (1) does not guarantee a passing grade in BIOL 2120, (2) does not guarantee admission into a Biology major program, and (3) does not award any course credit. The exam is designed solely to assess if you are ready to enroll in BIOL 2120, or if you first need to take BIOL 1110.

Indiana University Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing (BEST) oversees the administration of the Biology Exemption Exam and Calculus Placement Exam in cooperation with the Departments of Biology and Mathematics respectively. These undergraduate-level exams are optional and should be taken only if the student does not have prior academic credit or credit-by-testing for Biology-E 111/E 112, Biology-L 111/L 112, and/or Math-M 211.

Each exam is one hour and is computer-based. New students may take the Biology Exemption Exam and the Calculus Placement Exam in scheduled testing sessions during New Student Orientation and Welcome Week in August. New students needing the Biology Exemption Exam for spring may take the exam by appointment prior to the beginning of the spring semester. The Calculus Placement Exam is not available for spring. Both exams are not available remotely.

Currently-enrolled students needing the Biology Exemption Exam should contact the Department of Biology Academic Advising Office to obtain permission to take the Biology Exemption Exam. Students who still need to take the Calculus Placement Exam should review the Department of Mathematics Calculus Placement and Exemption Exams website to identify alternate testing opportunities later in the semester.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students who already possess strong Calculus skills but do not have credit for Calculus may choose to take the Calculus Placement Exam. If a student scores between 20-24 on this exam, he/she can obtain credit for one semester of Calculus (MATH-M 211) for 4 credit hours and confidently continue studying mathematics at a more advanced level. The exam covers the topics normally taught in MATH-M 211.

Additional information about other math placement and exemption exams is available on the Department of Mathematics Calculus Placement and Exemption Exams website. A sample Calculus exam can also be found on this website.

Incoming freshman and transfer students as well as currently matriculated students in their first semester at IU Bloomington OR who have NOT yet completed 51 credit hours on the IU Bloomington campus, and who have been approved by the Department of Biology academic advising staff, are eligible to take the Biology Exemption Exam. Academic credit may be awarded for BIOL-E 111 and BIOL-E 112. Credit earned through testing will appear as BIOL-E 111 and BIOL-E 112, and students will earn a grade of S (Satisfactory). This credit satisfies the BIOL-L 111 and BIOL-L 112 course requirements for biology majors and other science majors, but it carries no lab credit. Credit through testing can also apply toward College of Arts and Sciences N&M distribution requirements. The exam covers the topics normally taught in BIOL-L 111 and BIOL-L 112.
