Regarding the basic concept of bytecode and .dex file

Hello everyone 
I have a doubt

When I write my code in JAVA to build android app, is it like 1st it is converted to the bytecode and then to the .dex format (which Android virtual Machine can execute it).

Or is it like while building the Android Apps, there is no concept of bytecode?
