It's seems that Windows thinks that my device is ready to play at some point and tries to mount it or something. Why Rufus can't block this device while using it? It is really annoying to close explorer.exe every time i need a bootable usb stick.
For instance, what most people don't know is that Windows (e.g. VDS) won't let you clean up the existing partitions of a physical disk unless you have unlocked that disk first... which is very counter-intuitive and means that, during that time, there's no way of preventing other applications from accessing that disk.
In short, Rufus very much tries to lock both the physical disk and logical volumes as required, but it isn't always as logical as one expects. Another example of it is that, to get a newly formatted volume recognized, Windows also forces you to dismount the volume (as per the notes here), which means that, even if you acquired a lock on the volume, you have no choice but to relinquish it to keep Windows happy. Therefore, whereas there are many instances where Rufus would like nothing more but to keep a lock to the drive to prevent external interferences, Microsoft have designed their OS in such a manner that we can't do that, which of course opens the door for the kind of problem you observed.
Just note however that, according to your message, it is unlikely that it is actually explorer.exe itself that is the issue, as the (r) you see means it's only requesting read access, which shouldn't prevent Rufus from getting exclusive access to the volume. Most likely the actual conflict comes from one of the internal Windows processes or services, that are high level enough that they can't be listed (while Rufus tries to help by listing the processes accessing the drive, there's only so much it can do against Windows privileged processes, which are incredibly hard to enumerate). Most likely, you'll want to check that you aren't using one the the applications that is listed at the end of the Rufus FAQ, as some of these are known to be a bit too trigger happy with accessing volumes that they shouldn't be accessing when they have no business to do so.
Alternatively, since ironically your issue is likely the result of Rufus not being able to "block this device while using it" (by not being able to obtain the exclusive lock it requests to keep other applications at bay), you may want to press Alt-, (that's the Alt and comma keys) in Rufus, so that it won't try to lock drives.
Of course, if you do so, then there is always a risk that whatever other process is also trying to access said drive might modify it at the same time as Rufus is performing its operations, which could result in corrupted data or an unbootable drive (which is the precise reason why Rufus requests an exclusive lock by default)...
Disable the Windows 10 feature that automatically opens USB drives in Explorer, temporarily. The drive was opening over and over again in explorer, which matches the problem pretty clearly...
I'm also running Avira anti-virus, (edit: which is listed as incompatible by Rufus). Temporarily turn off Avira real-time protection for 10 minutes while running Rufus. This step on its own didn't fix the problem, so I'm not sure it's even necessary as long as you do the previous 2 steps.
If your USB got corrupted, you might need to reenable the "Open folder to view files" option in order to get windows to give you the "there's a problem with this drive, do you want to fix it?" popup. Re-disable the option once the drive is fixed and you want to try to write to it with Rufus again.
But I think I figured it out:In the Boot Selection you can hit the select button then select your file, but if you had put your file that you're trying to boot in the USB that your using then it won't work.
I am trying to get Windows on external drive with Rufus i went on my external Windows with a flash drive with Windows 10 iso and Windows support. The only drive that showed on Rufus was the flash drive i had another drive Ex fat Guid. I closed Windows and took the drive that i wanted to put Windows on and the USB Flash drive out of the computer.Booted back to Mac then booted back to Windows and it said there was an errer it would not start i have a second drive with Windows on it and said the same thing?
I am using the drives in a CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.It seems a bit odd for both the drives to have the same problem.the reason i am trying to get it on an external drive is two problems 1.it says no host Driver for Bluetooth the only thing that is not working as it should is the Trackpad. The main thing is no sound from the internal speakers but it shows the green sound-bar is working in them.I don,t understand why
I have plugged the Windows drive direst into the computer well one of them not the thunderbolt one. iI booted into Windows tried Rufus again and still said there was only the USB Flash drive in the devices all though i see that the drive i want to put Windows is showing on the drives in Windows and the light is showing it is working on CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.I see that he mentions in the video that not all drives work for it in Rufus .I am not sure what he means ,does it mean like mine that it does not show as a device in Rufus?Or that he goes through the process and does not work at all?Would it work with a thunderbolt drive?
. I don,t have a T2 chip computer.I worked it out with Rufus i managed to bring up the drive by pressing ALT and F, Rufus app was different to mine but that isn.t surprising as the video is four years old.It took 90 minutes to do i checked for errors ,it did not find any so far so good. But when i finally got it on there the same things were wrong with it.High def speakers and headphone audio showing they were working with the green bar.
So I now realise Is there anyway I can sort out the Bluetooth problem?it is the only thing with a yellow sign on it.On the sound the only device that shows is the Thunderbolt Dock. And what about the mic?Ihave not tried the camera.I will try the drive on my Mac mini and see if there are any problems there. I know you can't use it on different modals but I will see what the basics are.
The mouse and keyboard are workings see that you can get drivers for the track pad but only arable for the Mac Book. 2017 5k .3.5 How do I go about house missing drivers? So it is all down to the audio drivers to get the Mic to work. Can you give me a link for those drivers?I tried it on the Mini but said no bootable drive.Itried it from it from the iMac I pressed it but nothing happened.I have also put Windows on a T5 but all the same problems. The drivers you are talking about should be in the Windows sport folder they are the two I mentioned the Apple Audio. and the Apple one with the number on it.
I am trying to help my old friend get the sound to work on his i-Mac. He installed Windows 10 on his i-Mac using bootcamp as instructed by Apple. The sound is fine when in Apple mode, but when booted up in Windows 10, all seems to be fine except that there is no sound from the internal speakers. The i-Mac uses a cirrus sound chip, we can't find a Windows driver for it anywhere on line. Windows says that the sound is working correctly, but still no sound! We have tried all the usual checks, but still no sound. We are running out of ideas of what to do next or where to turn for help. Can you help us?The guy did not find an answer.
2017 5k 3.5.I looked at a old post on here and the person had the same problem as me no sound on the internal speakers. You told him to get an earlier Win 10 Iso i got one from Pirate bay needless to say i had the same problems as before. But the windows looks better than the latest one.I was wondering if i upgraded to Catalina would i still get the same drivers as on Mojave ?Windows Support Software?i suppose they would be the same.It is just an idea.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 from a USB drive. I'm using Rufus to create a bootable stick, but everytime I click start, it starts, and then gives the error ISO image extraction failure. What can I do?
for me the case was that I deleted the rufus_files folder rufus created when it's ran for the very first time. Actually, I keep a different folder for softwares, so i only copied .exe after i did my first iso extraction with rufus and deleted the folder (rufus_files).
I was trying to create the bootable USB from my office laptop and got in to this issue. I have read many solutions and it didn't work out. From one answer they said it might be due to the anti-virus effect and i tried using my personal laptop and it did work out.
In my case, the USB drive was encrypted with BitLocker. I had to remove BitLocker from the drive before it worked. In Windows, just search for BitLocker from the start menu, and see if BitLocker-To-Go is enabled for your drive. Disabling it, then trying Rufus again to write Ubuntu to the drive worked.
When installing windows 10 in a Uefi supported Motherboard using Rufus.I configured it to have a GPT partition & a Fat 32 boot file system. The boot file system depends on the size of either the install.esd or install.wim file. The install.wim file size is larger.
For MBR partitioned disk.NTFS boot file system is selected
Fat 32 maximum file size limit is 4GB while NTFS support more than 4GB.
If install.wim is more than 4GB.Rufus require user to select NTFS boot file system.
Question >
1.When using Rufus to create a Linux Mint bootable Usb to install Linux mint on an MBR partitioned disk(Legacy Bios motherboard).,can I select NTFS as boot file system?
2.Does Linux Mint OS has a install.wim file where one can check the size?
3.Do I need to enable Persistence & does persistence affect which boot file system to use?
According to Rufus Manual, for UEFI motherboard, select GPT partition & Fat32 boot file system.Only change to NTFS if install .wim is above 4GB.
& for Legacy Bios motherboard .select MBR partition & NTFS file system
