Hey everyone!

To introduce myself -- SF based techie here.  Interested in reputation systems.  Rails guy.

Enough chit-chat!  I was at sharing revolution conference the other day with lots of people (users) interested in adding sharing into their lives.  At one point, the  organizers had everyone write questions on to sticky notes, and entrepreneurial me snagged them at the end of the day.  They should be extremely useful in helping us build sites that fit the needs of users.  If we can think of ways to open up these to a more general audience, I welcome ideas; neither disqus nor quora really give an adequate system for one community to discuss a series of topics.  Homebrew may be the way.

Here they are, transliterated and grouped:

How do I make the first contact and find neighbors?

How do I start sharing with neighbors I've never met?

How do you find people to share with? (x2)

What can I do to connect to people in our neighborhood to encourage scaring food, skills, tools? How do you get sharing started?

How best to engage neighbors to share?

How can I find others who want to share their items or talents?

What's the first step? Is it forming a community?

How do you get started to share your knowledge?

How can I convince people that sharing is a viable alternative?

What is/are effective way(s) to introduce friends/family people of the concept of sharing - to make it appealing and inviting to them (to come on board and join in)?

How can we include children and make it fun?

How can sharing promote inter-generational engagement?

How can I overcome the fear of opening up to sharing?

Sharing is great and obviously reduces consumption by definition, but is it sometimes taken in the spirit of getting all we want and more rather than re-evaluating and reducing our material needs and consumptive expectations?

Are there tools for avoiding sharing problems?

Are there some 'standard' rules for sharing? Broken items, lost items, deposits? etc.

How do you address vandalism and/or damage to shared items?

What about security issues? Theft, Damage, Liability, Others?

What agreements are necessary for true sharing?

How do you say no if you have ADVERTISED to share your lawnmower?

Web-based reputation systems are one answer, but how does one deal with the bad actors?

Trust/Legal issues? How to protect self in case of damage?

How can we share time for fixing, repairing & maintaining shared items?

In Bike/Tool Coops - how to maintain proper upkeep/people to keep order, be there

If I'm using a dozen different kinds of sharing services, won't my experience of community be fragmented?

How can we better share our sharing ideas so we don't duplicate the efforts?

How do we learn what share opportunities are available?

What is the best website for finding most shareable websites? What % coverage?

What kind of  "standardized" protocol can be used be all to increase trust and accountability?

Is there any movement to federate the online reputation systems, so that we get a more global view of people's reliability?

How can I trust the person to whom I'm sharing?

How does one develop a level of trust for sharing?

How do I develop trust? How do I interview people to tell if I should share with them?

What are ways we can build trust with potential sharing strangers?

How can we make bartering services trending?

How to get mass numbers of people involved quickly-- the clock is ticking...

If we are all sharing how will public works (roads, schools) be paid for? As sharing would often eliminate taxable goods & services.

Effect on taxes?

How can we share with people who are money + material resource resource poor?

What are good ways to overcome one's hesitation when wants to have the other person share something with you, but you're not sure they would want anything you have to share?

How do you set good boundaries for a sharing situation?

How do you address privacy related issues in a sharing environment?

How to limit sharing to people within walking distance and who will walk, for small things?

How can we insure that the carbon footprint of the transportation involved in sharing is minimized?

How can I easily pay to rent or share small things?

How can language barriers be handled?

Where are our common public spaces - 24/7, indoor & outdoor - to share, and in which to encounter one another locally, so that our sharing activities are not always anonymous & with strangers & web based?

Right now the pool of people doing sharing tend to be good-hearted generous folks.  Won't this get diluted as sharing becomes more common and less reliable people take part?

If everyone wants to borrow, what are the benefits to owning?

What if someone I share with gets on my nerves and drains me?

How can access be managed so that the things I share will still be available to me when I need them?

How to assure that an object will be back in your possession when you need it?

How do people living together with different values reconcile differences in lifestyle?

How to bring unlike minded family members into the mix or how to move out onto your own?

How do you manage "inventory" in a sharing economy?

How do we break through the selfishness of the conspicuous consumption/accumulation society?  One hundred+ years of it is a lot to get over.

How can we do sharing without spending a lot of time on the internet/PC?

How can I learn how cost effective a given sharing solution is? ($ motivates)

Who do we connect with to mentor us in setting up a carshare?

How can we determine if our shares are legal?

Peter this is a really great list.
We're just putting together a basic structure here.
The first iteration will work something like a geopositioned
classified ads.
Some of those issues can be built into the Web API and some into the
client-side service.
I think it's time to focus right now though.
I'd love to open up the process to a wider audience, but extra noise
to filter through isn't going to help at the moment!
Have you seen what we've specified so far - its pretty basic, but the
requirements are clear and obvious and there will be plenty of
interest once we have something to show.

I agree, this is an excellent list.

I also agree that a basic geopositioned classified ads system seems to
be the obvious way forward.

One point for me that is constantly an issue with all classified ads
is that for yours2share users there are two critical locations, that
of the user and that of the asset. For example, someone living in
London could share a boat moored in Spain, with a partner who lives in
Paris. Although this always seems straightforward to me, not only do
no classified systems have the two locations built as standard (no
problem, you think, you just build in another set) but I've had
constant problems explaining this to developers, with the result that
they often leave some interlinking that causes mayhem. It also means
that the built-in things relating to the users' location such as
searching by radius are never what I need, I need searching by radius
from asset location. The asset location is more important than the
users', but the location is often recorded at registration and is
necessarily the users. Again, sounds easy, but developers tend to
assume it's what they expect, no matter how hard I flag this. I
mention this up front, because if both locations can't be recorded
etc, I can't interface with it.

The other aspect of sharing for me that is entirely non-classified
standard is the need for two financial values: total value of asset
and value of share. Again there is often additional functionality
relating to the financial value.

Sophie the API as so far described
http://www.sharingapi.org/index.php?title=Main_Page
already positions each object

Regarding 2 values, can you explain more?
This api won't be concerned with payments - that's a completely
different department for the time being.

Agreed, that list is not really on topic for a sharing API, my b! Well, if anyone runs accross interested communities, I would love to share with them as well.

On vacation, will have API input later :-)

Cheers,

Hi Peter, and welcome to the group!

And thanks also for the list, a lot of good stuff there. A platform to
discuss those would be awesome. As others already noted, this group
(or any google group) might not be the most effective platform.

Actually, I'd feel that a Quora topic groups might be a good place to
discuss about this stuff. Quora is, in my opinion, a fairly
sophisticated engine for finding answers to difficult questions
collectively. Why do you feel that it would not fit this purpose?

But, as others said, for now it's good to focus in the sharing api
discussion in this group.

Have a great vacation, Peter, hope to see you here later!

Sophie, interesting points, though I'm not really sure if I understood
correctly. From my point of view, two locations are usually needed
when doing a location based search: the location of the person doing
the search (this can be get straight from the browser) and the
location of the listing (this needs to be stored in the database when
creating the listing. So in this case we would be doing the radius
search using the user's location as the base: "what search results are
within a certain radius from me?" What is your use case for searching
by radius from asset location?

Thanks matslats, having looked at the listing properties and thought a
little, I'm fine with this, looks like a good list. Don't worry about
values.

(I'm so aware of the issues I've had over the years about the two
locations I need and their not being standard that is was the first
thing I thought about. Similarly with values, but I can live with
this, there is no right or wrong way. The issue is that is someone is
offering a quarter share in a Sunseeker yacht, the share could be
worth say £100,000 and the yacht worth £400,000. In standard
classified boat for sale ads, if they list as a Sunseeker for
£100,000, and someone sorts by price, it ends up alongside yachts of a
completely different class. If priced at £400,000 it is misleading.
So I've learnt to always state both. But for these purposes I'll feed
the share value.)

Hey Everyone,

Let me preface by saying that I am very much a novice when it comes to
coding, so please forgive any misunderstandings I may have of what
exactly an API is.

It seems to me that one of the most important things to remember in
developing this is that users need to be in control of their
information, so that they can share it on as many or as few networks
as possible. People are already squeamish about internet privacy, and
if it is possible that the contents of their home (which they are
offering to share) will be broadcast to everyone beyond their control,
most people will choose to stay away rather than become targets for
theft.

Just my two cents.
