API Craft Conference v1
Register here: http://api-craft.org/

Please join us for a two-day, three-night Open Space conference led by us, the API Craft community! Together, we will answer this question:

Where do we lead the APIs of tomorrow?

We possess the knowledge and experience to set the course for API best practices. Our diverse backgrounds and opinions will come together as we meet face-to-face to hash out a plan for pushing forward the state of the art.
  • What happens when theory collides with practice?
  • Is hypermedia more than just hype?
  • How do we maximize our impact as API trendsetters?
  • What's the big picture in this connected world?

Dates: Monday, July 29th through Wednesday, July 31st, 2013
Place: The Madison Theatre Building in Detroit, MI (1555 Broadway Street, Detroit, MI 48226)
People: API Craftsmen and Craftswomen
Format: Open Space Technology (a highly participatory process which has been successfully employed all over the world.)
Spots: 100
Rules: No Corporate Logos, No Pitches. Represent Thyself, Not Thycompany
Cost: $175

What will happen?

  1. Each attendee’s topics will have been raised, if the attendee took responsibility for raising them.
  2. All issues will have received full discussion to the extent desired.
  3. A full report of issues and discussions will be available to all participants.

That’s a promise.

How will you impact the future? Register today!

Really happy to see this.  I've enrolled and hope to host a meetup or get together on Netflix Denominator, which is a portability library for DNS Apis [1].  If anyone has suggestions for venue, please let me know.

At any rate, wonderful job getting this together and really excited to meet you all!

For those looking to further enrich their experience at this summer's API party (aka API Craft Conference http://api-craft.org), please check out Maker Faire Detroit http://www.makerfairedetroit.com.

Tickets for Maker Faire went on sale today, only $28 per adult:

I look forward to great API discussions and meeting fellow craftspeople in real life.

Hey guys,

who is staying in which hotel for how long?
a) I don't want to miss out on any craziness
b) I **hate** being the "nope, I have to walk that way for 12miles guys, so see ya tomorrow!"-guy

Cheers,
Felipe

I'm w/ Felipe here...

what's the "default" hotel for API-Craft this year? any discounts, etc.?

Likely candidates are:
- the Courtyard on Jefferson
- the Hilton Garden on Gratiot
- the Double Tree on Lafayette

Any comments/suggestions?

We did not pick a default hotel. They are all pretty close to one another and the meeting venue.

However, if you're not concerned with affiliate points and you're open to suggestions, I would pick the Greektown Casino Hotel:

I'm checked into the Greektown Casino Hotel now.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the end of July.

Cheers.

So when can we start proposing ideas on topics... I'd love to some idea of what we're going to cover on this un-conference.

Hey Kris,

You can start thinking about topics now, but the agenda itself will be set on Day 1 of the conference.  Attendees volunteer to lead sessions on topics of their choosing.  After the initial schedule has been set, attendees sign up for session topics that interest them and can even negotiate to combine or move sessions.

The question to answer is, "Where do we lead the APIs of tomorrow?"

I suspect many topics will revolve around the state of the art today, the future survivability of these approaches, and how we as community members can move the ball forward in a constructive and positive way.

The topics in this API Craft Google Group might provide a sample of what to expect, but I would bet on a lot more being discussed.  It's amazing how in-person collaboration can change course of meaningful conversation.  Personally, I'm excited to see the outcome!

If you already have a lot of great ideas, wonderful!  Let's get them on the board on Day 1 and make sure they get discussed.  Otherwise, feel free to hop in anywhere that feels right to you once the conference gets moving.  Always remember the Law of Two Feet: If you're not getting value out of a session, move on to a different one.  Maybe start your own conversation with another group of people.

This conference is designed to provide a meaningful experience to its attendees.  If you care about APIs, you're bound to get involved in discussions for which you're passionate.

Can't wait to see ya there!

I am a newbie to this sort of conference setting but I was just curious if would help to begun discussion on sessions - maybe a place where participants can list down topics they are interested in and have other vote even before we get to the conference.

I am not advocating that doing it instead of but might as well use the time before we get there to gauge where the interest is.

Thanks
Rahul

Hey Rahul,

Thanks for the suggestion.  We're new at this, too, but I think there's a certain magic about doing it in-person I'd like to preserve.  It's amazing what can be settled in 30 seconds of face-to-face time that would otherwise take 3 weeks of Internet time.

The secret is: There is no official voting.  Every idea is put on the board.  If there's no interest, no one signs up to attend, and we can collaboratively figure out another topic on the spot... or leave that meeting space/time slot blank.  There aren't a whole lot of rules around this, other than "we'll figure it out together when the time is right."

I understand some people might be slightly uncomfortable with that idea, but the history of this type of conference promises it all works out very well.  For our first go-around, I'd like to stick to the plan.  Once we have some experience facilitating this kind of conference, then we can start iterating with a little more confidence.

Can't wait to see you there!
