What is the purpose of etag ?

Hi,

      These are some issues in our UI that calls REST services. Data is populated from REST responses. Users change, add or delete this data. Dirty-checking of UI rows, for example, is not done. 

Is there a Restful way of doing this ? I know the UI can keep track of these but there is state maintained in the UI.

Does 'etag' help in such cases ?

What else is recommended ?
