The world of horse racing can be quite confusing, especially for the beginners. As a quick background, it is one of the oldest forms of gambling that was made legal even before casinos. No wonder, you can still find a rich tradition and love for this equestrian performance sport not only among the old, elite families but also among those who cherish the sight of animals giving their best performances.
It would not be misleading to mention that racing managers who look after thoroughbred partnerships have made horse racing accessible to even those who cannot afford to invest in a horse in the first place.
Of course, the risk factor in owning your horse and betting in races can be significant, especially when you are entirely new to this game. However, a racing manager works to enhance the winning chances of each horse by arranging the best trainers, placing them in the most suitable positions and keeping the owners and stakeholders well-informed about all the happenings. With a racing manager, you can make a somewhat educated bet than just relying on your instinct to win.
Like any other athlete, racehorses also have their unique nature, strengths, and weaknesses. Therefore, you cannot expect the same trainer or jockey to give the best preparation to all the horses. It is the job of a racing manager to make appropriate decisions for each horse based on the statistical data and track record. If this was not the case, horseracing would have been biased towards some specific horses, and you could easily judge the winning horse by just meeting the trainers and jockeys while they worked behind the scenes.
i. Pedigree trends or, in simple words, you can say family tree helps in deciding the order of the racehorses on the field. It is the ancestry of the horses that determines their position numbers during the race.
ii. Ragozin Number is the measure of the running speed of a horse. However, it is not merely a record of the horse's highest speed in previous races -- it accounts a lot of different factors for a fair comparison. Some of the factors include wind speed, surface, weight, depth of the track and track conditions. Ragozin Number is regarded as a very accurate representation of race career of a horse and is used to determine its preferred track surfaces and competition that it offers.
iii. Beyer Figures is another, and perhaps a more straightforward, measure of racehorses speed. For every race, the time and inherent speed of track are considered to assign a Beyer Figure to the horses. These figures are later used by the racing manager to plan new races and predict the competition each runner offers the rest.
Depending on the nature of racehorses, they are also assigned a jockey who can expertly handle them during the competition. However, jockey selection is not always an easy task as some horses may do well only with a few riders. Trainers and agents may influence this choice to some extent.
As an owner or thoroughbred partner, you often rely on the racing manager to represent you. Don't worry, a good manager is unbiased and works hard to facilitate everyone under his or her responsibility an equal chance to win. This is particularly helpful for those who are new to the world of horseracing and are not quite familiar with the factors that may sometimes improve the success chances of a successful bet. Moreover, the racing manager will also ensure that you are aware of the circumstances on the field and understand any technicalities involved. In short, if you are looking for some hands-on experience in this field, a racing manager is the person you should consider to help you.
The racing managers' coordination is not limited to the partners and owners. They also look after the needs of horse trainers and industry associates. Sometimes it is essential for them to ask trainers some difficult questions to ensure that everything is on the right track. In other instances, they must show a high level of trust for all the trainers so none of the racehorses may suffer a disadvantage during preparation. Therefore, you do not have to necessarily be concerned about your horse getting the best to give its optimum performance during the race. The exceptional communication skills of the racing manager are sufficient to take care of such issues.
[I]t was a very equal friendship ranging over many interests. They were from the same generation. They had been through the war. They shared a great love of the countryside and wildlife as well as horses. He and the Queen had a similar passion for every aspect and detail of horse breeding.[7]
He succeeded as Earl of Carnarvon in 1987, and sat in the House of Lords as a crossbencher, using his position to promote the interests of horseracing.[4] He also inherited the family seat, Highclere Castle.[11]
The Earl of Carnarvon died on 11 September 2001 aged 77, after suffering from myocardial infarction.[4] Earlier in the day he had watched television coverage of the September 11 attacks on the United States. Carnarvon was succeeded as the Queen's racing manager by his son-in-law John Warren, a former stable boy who had worked at the Highclere Stud and married his daughter Carolyn.[7][14]
