classified in the federal budget as MANDATORY? DISCRETIONARY? What's
the difference?

A Mandatory are things you need to buy( it is 2/3 of the budget(thats the mandatory part) and Discretionary  is 1/3 of the budget and are thigns you want to spend money but don't have to.

Things that are in mandatory budget are healthcare, medicare, social
security, as well as Income Support programs such as Food Stamps and
Veterans Retirement programs. In discretionary budget can be used on
military, FBI, the coast guard and highway projects. But if we have
more mandatory spending their would be less discretionary spending.
Like tatyana said the mandatory spending is 2/3 and discretionay
spending is 1/3.

This is how i know the difference...

Mandatory- it rhymes with obligatory and that means you have to.

Discretionary- think of it like your very discreat and no one knows
what you buy so it can be anything!

hope it helps
