From awful weather to exposed terrain, wild animals to remote backcountry, these are some of the most dangerous hikes in the U.S. While most people walk away from these hikes safe and sound, visitors are only one or two bad decisions away from the worst-case scenario.

The Elk Range features some of the highest, most beautiful, and most challenging mountains in the state. Due to its proximity to Denver, the high country has become extremely popular with a growing number of outdoor enthusiasts. However, its high visitation also gives hikers a false sense of confidence. Just a few decades ago, only several people a year would attempt Capitol Peak; in 2017, it claimed five lives in just six weeks.

Unpredictable storms can roll in from the Pacific Ocean and cover the snowfield in dense fog. These white-out conditions disorient the most experienced hikers, even in the middle of the summer. Hikers will need to come prepared with crampons, an ice ax, proper clothing, and a first aid kit. If you have any doubts about snow travel, you should consider hiring a professional guide to hike Camp Muir. More than 90 hikers have died on their way up this route, and 294 fatalities have occurred on the mountain overall.

The luxe touch: The Inn at Death Valley is a serene sanctuary to return to after a long day of exploration. Guests can chill out by the spring-fed pool, wander around the quaint stone patios and saunter through the date palm gardens, contrasting dramatically with the desert landscape. Other features include a tennis court, library, bar, historic paintings, exercise room and massage therapy.

Most people believe that Mount Everest is the highest point on Earth. While the summit of Mount Everest is the highest point above sea level, Mount Chimborazo is the highest spot above the centre of the Earth. Making it the closest place to outer space. By venturing on an adventure to Mount Chimborazo, visitors can put themselves in a position closest to outer space man can ever reach on foot. If you want to test your limits, there are several routes for brave climbers. The El Castillo route is the standard used by climbers, ascending 1,300 metres up the west side of the mountain and taking between eight and 12 hours to the Whymper summit. Then three to five hours to descend.

The luxe touch: For a spectacular stay surrounded by vibrant forests and rushing rivers, settle in at Waku Lodge. This jungle hideaway is filled with outdoor hammocks, dining areas, cosy rooms and incredible views of neighbouring waterfalls. There are many things to see and do during your visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Including hikes, boat trips and excursions to isolated caves and indigenous villages, which the lodge will organise for you.

The luxe touch: Discover the Antarctic Peninsula on board a Quark Expeditions ship. After a day walking on the ice and whizzing through frozen glaciers, you can retreat back to your ship to enjoy exquisite dining, educational lectures, relax in the health and wellness facilities, or enjoy a cocktail at one of the lounges.

The luxe touch: For inviting accommodation, go on a short sail to the island of St Helen and stay at Mantis St Helena Hotel, a combination of historic and contemporary buildings, situated in the capital of the British Overseas Territory, Jamestown. The hotel is only a short walk from the seafront, swimming pool, museum, shops, buzzing bars and enticing restaurants.

My parents and I had arrived on the evening bus from Toronto, but this was not the Niagara Falls I had expected: this place was brash, bright, and commercialized to the extreme, full of fast food chains, casinos, and garish souvenir stores.

More water flows over Niagara Falls than any other waterfall on earth; every second at high flow, more than 3160 tonnes of water from the Great Lakes flows over the edges of the American Falls, Bridal Falls, and Horseshoe Falls.

While boat tours have been operating in the Niagara Gorge since 1846, Hornblower Cruises have only been sailing here since 2014, when they took over from the original Maid of the Mist operators (who still sail from the US side of the river).

How much does a cruise cost? When we visited in November 2016, an adult ticket for the Voyage to the Falls cruise cost $19.95 plus tax, and the Journey Behind the Falls cost $11.50 plus tax.

Where should I stay? We stayed in Clifton Hills, the main tourist area next to the Falls, which is where most of the chain hotels are located. But if I was to visit again, I would probably stay a few miles away at Niagara on the Lake (which I hear is very picturesque) and take public transport in to see the Falls themselves.

Climbers all over the world go to Rjukan every year. Cold weather due to high pressure systems contribute to the development of some beautiful frozen waterfalls which are often several meters thick. The best time to go is in February and the worst in March, when the temperatures rise and some of the ice begins to melt, and in December when the wind is too strong. Lipton is the areas' most challenging icefall. There are no guarantees of decent ice climbing conditions.

Most routes are long and difficult. The mountain has some of the most beautiful waterfall ice routes, too. Because of the region's wide range of easy to difficult (and extreme and dangerous), the Canadian Rockies are viewed as the "mecca" for expert ice climbers and beginners. Glaciers, icefalls and ice walls are seem boundless. There are more than 100 ice climbing routes in Jasper and Banff national parks.

Still, more than 40 percent of the people who attempts to climb this mountain die. Ice walls are everywhere and they collapse all the time. Rocks fall too. Many people can't handle the altitude, some die. An ice climb there is accompanies by heavy snow and freezing winds.

This is probably the hardest low altitude climb in the world. It's a lot more technical than other climbs and the weather conditions are almost always bad. Ice avalanches are a given. You are climbing a vertical mile of ice sheet, topped with more ice. There are few clear days that make the climbing easier. Getting to the summit requires ice climbing. Whirling storm clouds are the usual environment.

You are not likely to find an experienced climber who will recommend climbing icebergs. It is totally dreamlike to have an ice ax be the only thing separating you from lethal 30-degree water beneath you. If you are really seeking places to climb that are more unpredictable and where the ice is more slashing, choose icebergs.

Kandersteg is one of the world's most famous ice-climbing locations. Ice climbing in Europe doesn't get a lot more difficult than there. Kandersteg has a lot of terrains, some of which is relatively easy. But the difficult ones are not to be underestimated. The ice festival the mountain hosts every year is known as "the European meet of ice enthusiasts." The challenging climbs are in the Gastern valley and at the Oeschinen lake.

This is the "Man Eater" mountain. Its name translates to Mount Black. Its chilling, but deserved, reputation is due to the enormous rocky heights. The mountain is simply rocks and ice. Avalanches are common. People have died from exhaustion, among many other causes such as altitude sickness (more than 26,000 feet), hypothermia, and frostbite. Just over 260 people have attempted to climb the mountain, 61 of them have died.

If you expect a mountain that is more than 6,000 feet to be easy, look for anything but winter sports as your hobby. The weather changes fast and all the time and ice and snow is everlasting in many parts of the mountain. More than 100 people have died trying to conquer the icy slopes. It gets under -40 degrees sometimes and strong winds make the conditions even worse.

Ice climbing on the fifth tallest mountain in the world is no easy matter. Far away from the common tourist treks and climbs, for decades only few teams have even tried it. Makalu is one of the harder mountains that go more than 8,000 feet and is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb ever because of its steep pitches and knife-edged ends.

Experts have nicknamed the K2 mountain, which the second in the world, one of the most technically difficult as well. Going up via the easiest terrain possible is a trip through a complicated glacier. Climbing on the ice pillars is highly dangerous because they crack and easily.

Angel Falls is one of Venezuela's top tourist attractions, despite its remoteness and the absence of roads leading to nearby villages. One of the world's great natural wonders, Angel Falls inspires feelings of awe in the hearts of those who make the journey.

Although sighted in the early twentieth century by the explorer Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz, the waterfall was not known to the Western world until it was visited in 1935 by the American aviator, James Crawford Angel, on a flight while searching for a valuable ore bed. In 1936, he returned and landed his plane at the top of the waterfall. The falls are currently named "Angel Falls" after him; interestingly, the indigenous name for the falls means "Devil's Mouth."

Angel's monoplane settled down into the marshy ground atop Auyan Tepui and remained there for 33 years before being lifted out by a helicopter. Jimmy Angel and his three companions managed to descend the mountain and make their way back to civilization in 11 days. Angel's plane currently sits in the Aviation Museum in Maracay, Venezuela. A similar plane visible at the top of the falls is a replica.
