Dear All,
I am a Zoo manager and am desperately looking into linking the Zoo-
database (ARKS4) to ArcGIS. We have downloaded the data model and are
now looking into adding animal records to the GDB. The big question is
where do you start? ARKS 4 have no (GIS) spatial information only an
enclosure table. The Zoo was maped and we have shapefiles of all the
enclosures. It will be possible to create a database table with
enclosure numbers (as in the ARKS 4 database) and include the polygon
information (enclosures) in an effort to link the GDB and ARKS 4. Is
there any person that can give us some guidance?
Thanks,

Meyer,

I would be happy to help you out with this process, and want to
reassure you that it should be possible depending on the format of the
ARKS 4 database. The general idea is to assign the ID of each
encolsure in your ARKS 4 database to each polygon in your shapefile.
You will also need to make sure that the ID field in your shapefile is
the same format as the ID field in ARKS 4 (e.g. text, short integer,
etc.) Once you have this step completed, you will need to figure out
how to work with ARKS 4 in ArcGIS. I would recommend contacting the
ISIS folks and ask them how to do this. ArcGIS supports many methods
of connecting to external databases, but you should mention ODBC and
OLE as options and they should know what these mean. You may also
want to look at the ArcGIS help under OLE connections for more
information.

Please feel free to contact me directly for more help with this.
