Battlefield 1943 is a first-person shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 through digital distribution. It takes place in the Pacific Theater of Operations of World War II. A Microsoft Windows version was planned but later cancelled.

Battlefield 1943 casts players as either being Marines with the United States Marine Corps (USMC) or the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) with up to 24 players on three maps: Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. After all players collectively reached 43 million kills, players received access to an additional Coral Sea map.[5]

Like Battlefield: Bad Company, 1943 features the Frostbite Engine for its environmental damage.[6][7] The game only features the series' signature Conquest mode[6] and a new game type called Air Superiority which was unlocked when the online gaming community reached a combined total of 43 million kills in Conquest. Similar to Battlefield Heroes, 1943 features only three classes: Infantryman, armed with an SMG and anti-tank rocket; Rifleman, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and rifle grenade; and Scout, armed with a scoped rifle, pistol, and dynamite. Each class has an unlimited supply of ammunition. Explosive ordnance, however, does take time to replenish. The game also features a regenerating health system.

At Sony's conference at E3 2011, Sony announced that a copy of Battlefield 1943 would be included on every disc of Battlefield 3 for the PlayStation 3, but upon release it was not included. EA stated through Battlefield's Twitter account by telling a customer that "In lieu of [Battlefield 1943] being available on [disc] for [PlayStation 3] customers, EA has made all [Battlefield 3] expansions available early to [PlayStation 3] customers."[15] Ultimately, EA decided to honor the pre-order announcement.[16]

On March 21, 2023, it was announced that the game will be delisted from digital storefronts on April 28, along with Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Servers for Battlefield 1943 will be shut down on December 8, 2023. This was announced by Electronic Arts (EA) on their website and social media channels in late 2022. After this date, the game will no longer be playable which has promoted strong opinions and debates on the legality of this decision. Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 servers will also be shutting down the same date.

The game received "favorable" reviews on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[34][35] In addition to having the best sales on the first day it was released, Battlefield 1943 went on to become the fastest selling download-only game after the first week.[36] Battlefield 1943 was the top selling Xbox Live Arcade game of 2009, as reported by Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb. It sold over 268,000 units in 2010.[37] As of May 2010, the game sold 1.5 million copies.[38]

Battlefield 1943 is still very active on both PS3 and Xbox. Xbox is significantly more populated due to backwards compatibility, however, a decent sized group of people still frequent 1943 on PS3 daily.

Using RPCS3 (the PS3 emulator) and Arcadia, you can now play Battlefield 1943 on PC - with online multiplayer on official servers. You are able to log into your existing EA account, meaning you have your existing stats and can play just like you would on an actual PS3.

Battlefield 1943 (also known as BF1943) is the eighth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. On August 31, 2010, it was announced that Battlefield 1943 would be bundled with the Ultimate Edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Battlefield 1943, alongside Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, were removed from digital storefronts on April 28th, 2023 and their online services will be shut down on December 8th, 2023.[3]

Battlefield 1943 features four classic maps from Battlefield 1942, one of which, Coral Sea, was later unlocked after the community reached a collective count of 43,000,000 kills. As such, it is not considered to be the "sequel" to Battlefield 1942, but more of a "revisioning" of it.[4]

The Battlefield 1943 theme is the only music track in-game and is the same as the famed theme to Battlefield 1942 with only some minor differences as it is an updated and orchestrated version. Jeeps can play the theme on one of the radio stations during rounds.

At Sony's E3 2011 press conference, EA announced that for all PlayStation 3 players, each new copy of Battlefield 3 would come with a free code of Battlefield 1943. This resulted in many to buy/pre-order the game, greatly boosting the game's overall sales. It was later revealed that EA and DICE had decided to retract their offer, stating that many of those who had pre-ordered Battlefield 3 already owned Battlefield 1943 and had been playing it for years. To compensate for this, EA and Sony announced that all PSN users would get a week early access to Back to Karkand.

Battlefield 1943 consists of only three multiplayer maps, but the scope of a downloadable title has never been so great. In 1943 you have complete freedom to take the battle in whatever direction you'd like: Hang back in the tall grass and snipe your unwitting foes; Deploy to the frontline, hijack a tank and capture a flag by force; Hop in a fighter plane for a dogfight high above the fray; Lay some C4 charges around your flag and lie in wait while the enemy blindly stumbles into your trap... the seemingly endless possibilities can be overwhelming to a soldier who is still wet behind the ears, but only a well-rounded soldier is worth his weight in Meals Ready-to-Eat. Let IGN Guides help you prepare for any and every eventuality, since no battle in 1943 is the same. Enough running around in circles on the aircraft carrier waiting for an airplane to spawn -- grab our guide and get to the front, soldier! This guide is still under construction. Please feel free to let us know what you'd like to see in it and thanks for your patience!

After that date, owners will still be able to access all offline feature - including single-player campaigns - in Mirror's Edge and Bad Company 1 & 2. However, the multiplayer-only Battlefield 1943 will no longer be playable.

Sorry, solo gamers, Battlefield 1943 can only be bought and played online. There%26rsquo;s no single player campaign, no option to fight bots %26ndash; there isn%26rsquo;t even the option to run around the maps on your own (unless you%26rsquo;re playing the tutorial). It%26rsquo;s all about human vs human FPS combat; a game so perfectly balanced to accommodate and encourage the randomness of online play that it simply wouldn%26rsquo;t work with AI. Its predecessor, Battlefield 1942, had a single-player campaign, but it was the multiplayer that really put the series on the map.

Why? An AI player simply wouldn%26rsquo;t think to take control of a plane and aim it at an enemy tank in a kamikaze dive-bomb maneuver to save a spawn-point from capture or co-ordinate an attack on an enemy base by using landing craft to circle around the back and men parachuting out of planes to attack from above. No, Battlefield 1943%26rsquo;s main strength is in the way it offers up a balanced set of boy%26rsquo;s toys and encourages its 24 players to experiment with them. Lone soldiers can easily take out tanks, and one man in an AA gun can dominate the skieslike a squadron of fighters.

These big, unscripted moments encourage a sense of camaraderie that few other multiplayer games manage. The maps too, seem to have been designed to promote a sense of parity between attacker and defender, man and machine. Although there are only three locations included in the download (with a fourth, free %26lsquo;aircraft only%26rsquo; stage becoming available shortly after launch) each area should be large and varied enough to hold your attention for months. Almost everything on each map can be levelled or destroyed, even stout buildings and trees, so there are few safe places to hide and camp with a sniper-rifle. On top of this, essential items like tanks, planes and AA emplacements regularly respawn, so there%26rsquo;s never a permanent advantage handed to any specific type of warfare or tactics.

When a game relies entirely on human interaction, there are always going to be highs and lows, and even with the odd dirty tactic, the thrills of Battlefield 1943 outweigh the frustrations. The super-reasonable price helps too. It%26rsquo;s almost an impulse buy, but despite being roughly a quarter of the price, the value and production values eclipse most full-price games. A great way to save cash and experience multiplayer gaming at its purest, most unpredictable best.

Electronic Arts and DICE announced on Tuesday that ahead of server shutdowns planned for December 8th, 2023, they would be removing Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 1 and 2 from sale starting April 28th. Their announcement follows:

Starting April 28 2023, Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 1 & 2 will be removed from digital storefronts and you will no longer be able to purchase them. This is in preparation for the retirement of the online services for these titles which will happen on December 8 2023. For Bad Company 1 & 2, you can still continue playing them and use their respective offline features, such as the single player campaign. You can also read our FAQ and Service Updates for further information on the retirement of online services.
