PVC flex banners can cause cancer

I am reproducing one news item published in www.deccanchronicle.com on 20.12.2011 on the above subject. Now you can view it directly at the following address.

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/hyderabad/pvc-flex-banners-can-cause-cancer-052

Now read the article………

Flex banners made of poly-vinyl chloride are a serious environmental and health hazard. They can cause cancers and infertility.

Municipal authorities and the Pollution Control Board have failed to prevent people from burning flex banners thrown in dustbins and at dump-yards. The city produces lakhs of flex banners as politicians and commercial establishments prefer them for advertising and every street has them.

An engineer and environment activist, who is also member of the AP Environment Connect, says, “Flex banners deliver high-quality digital prints, but they are not bio-degradable and when they burn, they emit toxic fumes that have serious effects on health.” He added, “The toxins released when the flex banners are burnt are carcinogenic. These days there is excessive usage of the flex banners by the politicians. We find them even in villages.”

Recycling post-consumer PVC is difficult because vinyl products are mixtures of PVC and additives.
Environmentalist Devidan Mangnani says, “PVC leaches out slowly into the soil and pollutes it. The GHMC should ban its use of flex banners.”

*************************

Now you can decide your choices between PVC banners and cloth banners with artistic style to save our environment as well as our health. We are allowing more pollution with our careless attitude and confusing public by saying that using non-biodegradable items will save trees. It is left to you and you can save pollution and protect public health with your choice.

Regarding the use of flex banners, unless the government provides an alternate viable solution, the use of flex banners will continue as it is easy to print and fast. The government/scientists should develop some substance to add to cloth so that it can be easily printed. If this printing problem is solved, then the use of flex banners will automatically cease.

Many want others to do some work and ignore their responsibility to do
some thing to save energy. When we can get beautiful clothe banners
withing our reach we go for flex banners which give us bad smell and
spoil our own surroundings. Still you want to ignore your own duty to
save the surroundings who else will come and save nature. Thank god I
have no such mind. I think that I should do something to save nature
before asking others. Which department of government will save nature.
Every one of has duty to guard our own planet against evils.

Nothing will be automatic unless we do it. If we keep thinking on the lines of easy and fast, things will not change. We should change our mindset to what is meaningful. And let us not keep waiting for someone else to do something - like alternate solutions or banning.

As an example, last month, we had our high school reunion. Instead of flexi banners, we just did banners on chart paper which my daughter enthusiastically painted with her water colors and crayons. Not only was the cost low, it was environment friendly and gave immense joy to a child. It could also be pasted on the wall easily due to the light weight. And it stood out with vibrant colors of India and appreciated by all. And she is going to use the back side now for her own paintings.

I am attaching  pictures of the same for your benefit.

Where there is will, there is always a way! So it is time we found our ways and mended them where necessary.

Cheers
