Dear Dr. B. Janaradhan
Reddy, IAS
Sub: “Please take
urgent action and save our lives” -- Request to stop “Illegal Hut Dweller
Burning firewood adjacent to my house”
Myself and my
wife are senior citizens and living in the house [Plot No. 277, Road No. 78,
Jubilee Hills-III]. I with the help of
MCH and Huda Horticulture officers developed greenbelt in the MCH [now it is
GHMC] Park – not developed as Park yet. Now it is lush with greenery.
At the end of the lane opposite to Padmalaya
studio, a gate was erected to the Park. Just before the gate, on either side of
the road huts were built and people are living there; the adjacent two plots
are vacant. My house is bordered on two
sides to the park [west and north]. The huts are at the corner point of southwest
where an Electric pole is located [here inside the park the hut dwellers made
bath room and breeding mosquitoes]. Drinking
water pipe line of my house and as well drainage line passes under the huts.
The hut
dwellers are cutting the trees in the park and using it as firewood. Mornings and evenings they burn the wood. The
smoke emanating from the fire enters in to my house causing uncomfortable [low
breathing] with reduced Oxygen levels. I personally told the hut dwellers not
to burn wood as the pollution is entering in to my house and causing health
problems as we are aged people. He continued to burn wood daily mornings and
evenings. Even on 22nd morning I told them in severe words but they
burn the wood as usual.
Internationally fight is going on against the use
of wood in cocking in developing countries, as it is causing deaths. To bring
down the human casualties, Government of India is trying to extend electricity
to all villages. Also gas is also
provided under subsidy. But
unfortunately in urban areas, particularly in GHMC area in Hyderabad the hut
dwellers are concentrated in and around park areas surrounding residential
areas and using wood cut from the parks and using it for cocking and causing
health hazards to the people living in those localities. People with Asthma are
the main casualties.
Appreciate if you could make the hut
dweller stop burning fire wood
Another most important issue is putting
garbage in the park and burning it.
On April 2nd 2016 midnight the
garbage was put on fire in front of my house.
Luckily, I woke up in the mid night saw the fire approaching towards my
house, I put off the fire. I am 72 year old retired UN Expert. After seeing my ordeal, my wife good severe
depression and hospitalized as her other health problems aggravated with this.
She was in hospital for more than one month – in four different hospitals. Now, she returned home and yet she needs
assistance. Before that every day she
used to go for Yoga in Red Cross nature cure hospital at Check Post on Road No.
2 Banjara Hills. I spent few lakhs of
rupees for hospital bills and now I hired a watchman to watch and stop burning
of garbage during night time to protect myself and my wife and my house coming
under fire.
MCH used to keep Garbage bins along the roads
and collect the garbage from the bins.
With GHMC the garbage bins were removed and GHMC officials instructed
residents to put the garbage in park areas.
The GHMC sweepers also put the garbage in Parks. Once in week they put
the garbage on fire either in the mornings or in the evenings. GHMC ordered not
to put garbage on roads. Once I called fire services to put off the fire as
fire started engulfing the trees. They came but told me, we will not help you
in future as people are purposely putting on fire. I sent several letters to
commissioners and phoned to officials. They were silent. The reasons why GMCH officials doing this as
well as other issues I sent mails to Chief Secretary on few occasions also – on
the occasion of Swacch Hyderabad. People dumping garbage in water bodies &
drains/nalas are safe; with the dumping of garbage in parks the neighbours are
at risk.
Appreciate to look for a solution to
stop garbage burning in the parks. People who come forward to build greenery on
their own should not become victim, or it becomes a deathbed to them; and thus
they should not curse GHMC officials.
In fact few years back when I was a member of
CFE Committee of Pollution Control Board cleared projects to produce power from
garbage.
With Kind Regards
Dr.
S. Jeevananda Reddy
