ToP. Raghuveer IFSAddl PCCF / Director. A.P. Forest AcademyDulapally, Director General (CEFNARM)Dear Sir,This is to inform you that quarrying has been done on a large scale in the middle of the Narsapur forest. We have been to the forest to watch birds yesterday (February 3rd) as part of this year's bird race. We were shocked to see the huge chunk land being dug up and tractors loading soil to be used for commercial purposes.I happened to ask one of them who said they have taken permission. When I asked about the department which gave them permission, they simply skipped my question. This is my second trip to Narsapur forest. The difference between last year and this year is the quarrying. People started cultivating agriculture right on the banks of Narsapur Lake. This is just a beginning. We will find more creating space for them to cultivate crops. In the process, they will start cutting down the trees. I have also found a big trolley parked close to bushes (God knows where those five people in the van have gone and for what purpose).Request you sir, to kindly stop that sand quarrying in the forest. My questions:
- Are private people given permission to transport soil from the forest? If so, who would give permission? is it the Forest Dept?
- A huge area has already been cleared, which implies that the quarrying has been happening for a long time. Do such forests, home to more than 100 species of birds, are not patrolled or closely watched?
- If people start cleaning up the forest, I bet Narsapur Forest would be the next forest which we would be telling our children that "Once Upon A Time in Narsapur" forest story. How can we stop this Sir?
The soil belongs to the forest. It cannot be transported out. And definitely, not for commercial purposes. Request you to kindly look into this matter and your timely reaction to this concern will be benefitting, not just birdwatchers, but also the forest itself.Tractor number: AP23P 1654I am prepared to show you the place, if you are willing to take necessary action.Kind regards,Prasad
This is very good mechanism of bringing violations to notice ...i suggest all of us shud emulate...nd report any such violatios hsppening in the city around us ..on this network...and its grt that we have socially concious officers like Raghuveer Garu to take follow up action....wish thus cud work for land nd water body encroachment also...
Jasveen

Dear Mr. Raghuveer,
Is it correct that mining licences can be given in Reserved Forests (our interest: for quarrying of granite)? Like there are huge quarries in the Reserved Forests south of Shameerpet Lake, around Keesaragutta etc.
Could we assume that rocks in RF are safe? Or Not?

Dear Mr. Raghuveer,
Were you able to find out about quarries in Reserved Forests in Greater Hyderabad (pl. refer to your mail underneath)?
I see from a “Statement showing the Quarry Leases for Road Metal and Building Stone granted after issuance of ban orders (for granting of new leases in 2001) by the District Collector, RR District” that there is a quarry of 3,720 hects in Reserved Forest granted to Sree Laxmi Narasimha Metal Industry. This is in Sy.No. 1265, Shameerpet Village, Shameerpet Mandal. The lease period is 3.5.2005 to 2.5.2015!
Would you kindly let me know if this quarry has the sanction of the Central Government.
Thanking you,
Frauke Quader, Secretary

Dear Ms. Frauke
thanks for your mail. Mining is a non-forest activity and if any forest area is to be diverted for this purpose the procedure prescribed under the Forest Conservation Act 1980 and the Rules made thereunder needs to be followed. All the applications have to be first vetted by the mining department. All such proposals are processed in accordance with the prescribed procedure and further action taken. Diversion of any forest land for non forestry purpose needs the prior concurrence of Govt. of India.
Let me check with DFO Hyderabad whether any such approved quarries are there in RF as indicated in your mail.
