Dear all,                                                              Here with I am attaching my other work to save sparrow

I observed 5to 6 house sparrows are moving here and there in our street at Kainada. And observed they are not entering into the Apartment. . (Middle of the year 2004)

Photo 1: arranged paddy grain as feed on the compound wall and attracted the house sparrows into the apartment latter into our balcony. This process took some six months to the sparrows entering into apartment and into the balcony and to stebilise.

Photo 2: Arranged a carton as a nest box. The sparrows entered into the nest box but nesting did not take place. The exact reason did not know why they did not nest? The proper reason could not find out.

Photo3: Latter arranged brown coloured carton nest box. One pair occupied the nest box. They started to build the nest.

Photo 4: They completed nesting.

Photo 5: They successfully brooded and feeding the chicks.

Photo 6: Chick was alerted by hearing the sound of the parents arriving to feed them.

Photo 7: Third box arranged (Rose colour.)

Photo 8: They build nests on both sides of the box and brooded.

Photo 9: Feeding the chicks.

Photo 10: arranging of paddy grain bundle by one village. Here the villagers still continue the traditional practice. This can be seen in some of the villages of East Godavary district Andhra Pradesh.

Previously while at Bapatla  Luckily one pair of sparrow tried to nest on one of our ventilator of my residence. They tried number of days to nest but as the space is not sufficient and their efforts were not successful to raise the nest and left the place. Later after few months they returned again probably the same pair or another pair. Now I have given a support a cord board piece such that the nesting material to withstand. They completed nest successfully and raised the brood. This is around 1996/97.

Best wishes
K.mrutyumjaya Rao.

Dear Shri. Mrutyumjaya,

Thanks for your wonderful mail.  It would be nice, if you could start a "SAVE THE SPARROW" initiative that you have undertaken earlier.  It is wonderful to know that you are taking some good steps to save sparrow.

Most of us are probably aware by now of the campaign to save the declining population of sparrow and other birds. Thanks to your interesting mail, I take even greater pleasure in seeing your good photographs.

Great thought of keeping water for birds in summer. I had already done that. Feeding them with some food or grains can also help.

We can try to build card board next for these birds. Read here what Gujarat people are doing
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/world-house-sparrow-day-on-march-20/591345/0

Even if a single person decides to keep water or do anything for the birds, if you have any idea to share, or if you have done anything do comment about it.

With warm regards,

Chandrasekhar, Nemani...

Dear All,

Thank you and to members Gopalakrishna, Chandrasekhar, G.K. Rao, Manasa Parakala Saraswathi, Hrinath reddy, Ramakrishna reddy  and others for replies and good support. Glad to know that you already provided water and feed to the sparrows and pigeons.  Please keep water under shade it is better to use earthen ware vassal. Lesser depth of vassals 3” to 4” size of meals plates are more convenient to birds to drink and bath. Now a day’s caterers are using this type of earthen ware pots for curds. But the water spills away during bath and requires some maintenance. Pots and troughs also ok. According to the place available we can choose them even from a cup size. At Bapatla I used to keep bucket full of water under tree shade for birds. Red vented bulbuls used to take bath in the bucket. Later at kakinada I am with the Idea of earthen ware vessel. At Kakinada wash is in balcony with plenty of water even though I arranged water with earthen ware vassal but the sparrows used water in the cellar portion floor probably  water spread in more area and cooler than balcony.

Now I shifted my residence twice within the period of one year. Present residence also

is an apartment but so far I didn’t find any sparrow in the vicinity.

In Hyderabad as the members spread in different localities first find out the status and distribution of sparrows in different localities. Also Search in vegetable markets Rytu bazaars and other public places. If sparrows found other than the members’ localities the residents of that locality may be given awareness towards sparrows and to arrange nest boxes and feed. Latter you can select awareness classes in educational institutes in Hyderabad. Care to be taken from crows.  Better to use meshed balcony. If you are going to arrange nest boxes in public places arrange wooden boxes with deep cavity with sufficient entrance hole for sparrows only. Greenery places are quite good. In public parks encourage grass strips with small bushes for the growth of insets. Discourage use of pesticides. Generally nest material they will collect. You can provide thread pieces, Haystack pieces, worn out gunny bag pieces, worn out coir mats etc.  Please visit www.natureforever.org and www.world housesparrowday.org.

Let us make our full efforts to save sparrow.

Best wishes

K.Mrutyumjaya rao.
