Somersby (marketed as Somersby Cider in English speaking countries) is a brand of 4.5% abv cider by Danish brewing company Carlsberg Group. Developed in 2008,[1] it was originally developed for the Danish market, but today has been launched in more than 46 markets, including all of Europe, Israel, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Canada, Sweden, Sri Lanka, South Africa, the United States and Laos.[2] Of the world's ten biggest cider brands, Somersby was the one that grew most in 2012.[2]
In 2012, Carlsberg UK developed and introduced a new version of Somersby Cider specific to the United Kingdom market. Somersby Cider UK is a 4.5% ABV medium dry cider with no artificial flavours or sweeteners.[3]
Apart from pure apple cider, the Somersby brand is also being used for pear cider, blackberry-flavoured apple cider, rhubarb, elderflower, ginger lemon, blueberry, apple burst, cranberry-flavoured apple cider, citrus-flavoured apple cider, watermelon-flavoured apple cider and a calorie-reduced apple cider.[6]
In Poland, the brand Somersby is used by Carlsberg to market fruit-flavoured beer instead of cider. This is due to the relative unpopularity of cider as a type of drink among Polish customers, as well as legal restrictions on the sale and marketing of cider in the country, which include a ban on advertisement.[7]
Description: In England, you have brewed apple cider in unusual times. And the proud tradition is the starting point for the development of Somersby Apple Cider. However, we have adapted our cider to the Danish taste. In the aroma you will experience a scent of lovely sun-filled summer furniture, and the taste ends with a pleasant acid. Somersby Apple Cider is very refreshing especially when you enjoy it ice cold and over ice.

I taste tested the following ciders in groups of at least 4 different brands. The taste testing groups were divided by fruit flavour (apple, pear, or berry) and by glass bottles versus cans. I started with the dry ciders and worked my way up to the sweetest ciders. Please keep in mind that these reviews are based only on my personal taste and opinion.
The Dirty Granny is a dark honey colour. The Dirty Granny is made from a large percentage of Granny Smith apples, this accounts for the tartness and medium sweetness. The Dirty Granny is the only cider on this list that you would have a chance at identifying the apple varieties used. But without a ingredients list one can never be sure what one is drinking.
Magners cider is amber with a pink tinge. One of the few ciders here that display so bitterness. Sarah commented that the smell reminded her of a fresh Band-Aid, a sort of antiseptic scent. A medium sweetness. Once we added some ice the cider was much more enjoyable as it had mellowed out.
You may think I am being harsh but these are quite far behind where most ciders I reviewed and they are a mile behind my favourite ciders of 2014. In general they are overly sweet and lack sophistication. They are simply not real ciders.
The NHS recommends 30 g of free sugars a day. These are on top of the nutritional sugars contained in food. A balanced diet will contain sugars as part of your meals, but as cider is a nice bonus to have in our lives, we count the sugar in cider as free sugars. The percentages you see are out of the 30 g a day that the NHS recommends.
Choose ciders that have an apple flavour. Ciders with added fruits and flavours tend to be more sugary. So avoid pear, raspberry and dark fruits ciders. Go for the more traditional ciders that taste less sweet. Dry ciders are best.
Somersby Apple Cider is a refreshing cider with a uniquely juicy apple flavour, with 4.5% alcohol. A tasty and natural choice for brunch, afternoons, and happy moments with your friends. Its sparkling bubbles turn every sip into an exciting taste experience. Best served over ice.

Somersby is Carlsberg Group's biggest selling cider and was among the world's fastest growing international ciders in 2014. It is a very popular alternative to beer and wine, and a natural alternative to flavoured Ready-to-Drink products.
Apple Cider is derived by the fermentation of the juice of apples, without at any time adding distilled alcohol. Sugar and apple juice may be added both prior and post fermentation. Most ciders are carbonated and food additives (permitted in EU legislation) can be used.
Danes' thirst for sugar-free and lower-calorie soft drinks and beer has increased significantly in recent years, and more diet and sugar-free products have entered their shopping baskets. But while the range of soft drinks and beer has grown, there has not been a reduced-calorie cider.
"Somersby Apple Lite is a refreshing cider with a mild sweetness complimented with fruity apple notes, similar in many ways to our existing Apple Cider, but with half the calories and a less sweet flavour profile," says Allan Aagaard Jensen, brand manager for Somersby at Carlsberg Denmark.
"For a number of years, there has been a great demand for light and low-calorie products, and combined with the Danes' continued strong focus on health, the time is right to launch Denmark's first low-calorie cider, which more people are also demanding," says Allan Aagaard Jensen and continues:
Somersby Apple Lite has an alcohol content of 4.0%, even though it is a reduced-calorie version. And getting the right flavour and amount of sweetness with fewer calories has been an exciting and challenging task, which has now been achieved.
"Producing a low-calorie cider is complicated because flavour is the most important parameter, but after a lot of thorough and hard work, we now have a cider that we are sure consumers will enjoy. We see a clear trend in the market that more people want a less sweet cider variant, and of course we want to accommodate that," says Allan Aagaard Jensen.
Somersby Apple Cider has a delightful sparkling sweetness with flowery, green, and blossoming aromas. Consist of water, apple wine, sugar, apple juice concentrate, carbon dioxide, citric acid, natural flavoring, potassium sorbate as a preservative, and ammonia caramel as a color.
Tastes like an easy-to-drink apple cider with a well-balanced flavor. A delightful drink with a pleasant sparkling sweetness and a fruity and sour balance. Fresh apple dominates the aroma, which is balanced by flowery, green, and blossoming notes. Long-lasting fruity aromas, nice acidity, and lingering sweetness round out the finish.
