Hey guys,

I was asked for a few COOL songs that have lyrics encapsulating ice or polar or something like that (not frosty the snowman…)…

I know there are a few out there, but I am really bad with remembering names.

Does anyone have a good tip for me?

They will be included in a boost in Oslo for the PIC (Polar Information Commons – or rather the IPY data legacy) I am helping with.

Highly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Kim

Hi Kim,

there is some cool stuff on YouTube, e.g. search for 'ice ice baby'; one sciency adaptation is 'cruise cruise baby', but that may not be what you're looking for...

Hope this helps, Claudia

Hi Kim,

Try the following (say thanks to my husband):

- Icehouse or Great Southern Land by ICEHOUSE.
- Don't Eat the Yellow Snow by Frank Zappa.
- So Cold by Breaking Benjamin.

Furthermore, you could contact Machiel Lamers, one of my fellow polar tourism researchers, who has written and recorded a number of songs about Antarctica. He's really good.
If you think this would be appropriate, I can put the two of you in touch.

cheers,
Daniela

Dear Kim,
This is not a good song, but for sheer ridiculousness you can't beat David Haselhoff singing "The Pingu Dance" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eafiz11hW9s). I recall an entire CD being given to participants in the 1st APECS meeting at Sanga Saby in 2007. Ah, here it is. "Muewseek from sixty above..." This has a number of songs (titled in Swedish, I think). For some reason, I have one extra copy of that CD that I can mail to you if you give me your address. The case says that if you want information about the songs, you can contact da...@illicord.se. It is about 50 minutes long and marked with the IPY 2007-2009 sticker. The quotation "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield" starts off the CD and I believe that I hear indigenous singers as well, otherwise it is a mix of musical styles.

Combing through the National Science Foundation's past participants in the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program unearths the following musicians and sound artists:
Henry Kaiser (http://www.kff.org/about/henrykaiser.cfm)
Cheryl E. Leonard (http://www.musicfromtheice.blogspot.com/)
Andrea Polli (http://www.90degreessouth.org/) - data sonification
Douglas Quin (http://www.antarctica2000.net/ & http://www.wildsanctuary.com/antarctica.html) - made recordings of natural sounds in Antarctica

In terms of songs that evoke a sense of place, I recommend "Can't take it in" by Imogen Heap (taken from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esz99cV6Ado) or New Order's "Crystal" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6WLaAVJ60A&feature=related).

Also, if you are looking for science-related songs, try out "The Symphony of Science," which blends together music with auto-tuned speeches from the likes of Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, and Richard Dawkins (http://www.symphonyofscience.com/). You can download all the songs and videos from their website for free. There is "IGY" by Donald Fagen from the band "Steely Dan" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqUU-GCuppo), which captures the hopeful spirit that emerged after the IGY.

I hope that this is helpful!
                                   Sincerely,
                                               Jason

Hello Kim,

At least the name of the song is polar related. I am not sure about text (I am bad in catching words and could not find lyrics in the web)

cheers

Well, this is off-colour, not at all politically correct, but probably the funniest 'Polar Song' I could think off.  Enjoy...

Hi Kim,

Here's a link for a music video from the 2008 Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica (WIFFA):

This was one of the submissions for the 48 hour film contest. Participants from various winter stations each submitted a requirement for elements that had to be included in the films (props, phrases, sounds, etc.), and the full list of requirements was e-mailed to the stations at the beginning of the 48 hours in which the films were to be made. My friend Anthony Powell wrote a song and shot the video for this one. Be warned, it's quite silly.

Keep an eye out for Anthony's more professional work. He started doing time-lapse photography at McMurdo as a hobby a number of years ago, and it has turned into a career for him. He came down to McMurdo on an artist and writer grant, and he has worked with the BBC film crews in Antarctica. He's currently working on a feature-length film of his work. If you want to see more, you can check-out his website: http://www.antarcticimages.com/.

Well, enjoy the music of a winter-over crew. If you have trouble downloading it, I can send you a copy.

Cheers,
Jen

Hi again,

I thought of Inuit and Chukchi throat singers and Saami yoikers. YouTube searches can bring-up multiple examples of each. The Chukotka Dance Troupe has some pretty exciting music.

For the other end of the spectrum, and globe, here's a pop song that mentions Antarctica in the chorus:

Cheers,
Jen

Just to complement the link Jen just sent, ANDRILL got the permission from the band to make this into an ANDRILL video:
