Hei RAC folks,

In Oslo, we discussed setting up listservers for the various disciplines so that the DC can get more interaction going and have an easy means to communicate with people interested in their disciplines. After chatting with Jenny B., it seems the easiest to go with the same setup the policy listserv uses. It's super easy to handle and maintain. The link to the forum is something Jen R. and I are still working on, so please bear with us.

To get the listservs going though, could the DCs please send me their preferred name for their mailinglist? Be quick, I leave for fieldwork on the 17th July, so if you want to have it set up before then, I need your answer by the 15th!!!

Below is a list of current listservs/ discipline groups:
- mi...@apecs.is (polar microbial ecology)
- social-...@apecs.is ???
Moderators/owners of the marine and the social-science one: where they supposed to be listservs for the DCs or interest groups like the policy one or are they something else?

Hope to hear from you soon,
Geli

Hi All,

I am happy to create these lists for you, as Geli is headed out to sea for a while.

Please send me ASAP:

1) The name of your mailing list (eg. APECS Marine Research)

2) The email address you would like to have (eg. mar...@apecs.is)

3) A short (~3 sentences) description about the list and what you will use it for.
( Eg. "Welcome to the Polar Policy Listserve, where young researchers in political science, governance, law, and international relations and all fields in-between are invited to join our online network. As a starting point, the group will exchange and discuss current and pressing issues related to polar policy, including legal, political, anthropological or other related fields relevant to the polar regions. Issues related to climate change governance, sovereignty and security, international cooperation, indigenous peoples rights or environmental policies are encouraged to be discussed here. As always, people from all disciplines are encouraged to join. Discussion on what exactly policy is, what it means and how it is formed can help young scientists realize that all forms of research have policy implications. Sharing ideas about how to frame and communicate science with policy in mind are important points of discussion for the group. If you are interested in participating in these discussions, please contact in...@apecs.is in order to be added to the list.")

Once I have all of that information, I can set up your mailing list and you can begin to populate it :)

Thanks
jenny

Hi all,

We have a few choices for linking the discussion fora on the APECS website to the listserves:
  • Posts to the literature reviews and other discipline-specific fora can trigger an automatic e-mail to the various listserves or to individuals. This option would be the easiest and simplest to set-up.
    • All of the components of the APECS website (job postings, lit review, etc.) are in the same database, so it would be possible to have posts to multiple areas trigger the auto e-mails.
    • What type of info would we want on the automatic e-mails? (i.e. # of posts, titles of posts, etc.) If you like this option, make an example of what information you would like.
  • If we want to archive the listserve e-mails on the website, a more complex solution will have to be found. We'd need to either find or create the components to do this.
  • If we want to have an automatically-generated weekly summary of all of the posting activity in a particular area, custom scripts will need to be written.
    • (The last two options can be done, they'll just require more work and time.)

Ingolfur at the Arctic Portal has been generous with his time and expertise in helping us to identify our options. As you decide what will work best for your particular listserve / forum link, he'll be able to provide further feedback and help. So, a huge thanks goes to Ingolfur and the other Arctic Portal folks.

For the time being, would everyone would be happy to go with the first option (of having posts to the website trigger an auto-notification) to see how well it meets our needs? If so, send me the information that you want to receive as well as the recipient address (whether the listserve, your personal address, or other addresses).

Cheers,
Jen

hei jen,
great news and ideas!
if we find somebody to do this for us i'd go for the weekly summaries. (not sure in ingolfur would have the time or know of somebody who would do it for us? or could train one of us?) i think automatic emails for every single post would be too much, also for a dc as moderator.
regarding which posts should trigger a notification email, i'd include relevant job and event postings (which would mean though that we need to include categories in the job and event posting forms), submitted posters that might be of interest, and of course lit forum entries of relevance. from the forum, i guess just initial posts in the forum related to the listserv groups are sufficient. and titles only for me.
until we get everything in place, yes, the first option would be fine, probably going to the dc's only for them to then filter the relevant bits and send them on to the list.
cheers, geli
