WHITE IBIS ROOKERY FUNDRAISER
Saturday May 4th, 2013
3:00PM
Granddaddy's Restaurant (to carpool to Jinright's Boston farm)
2128 Smith Avenue in Thomasville, GA 31792
RSVP by Thursday May 2nd 12pm
Cost: $25.00
Dear Birdsong Nature Center Friends,
Betty and Robert Jinright have been dear friends of Betty Komarek and Birdsong for many years. They are offering us a marvelous opportunity to visit a White Ibis rookery on their family farm and watch hundreds of White Ibis come in from the surrounding countryside to roost at dusk. Last year these birds started roosting and nesting here, in this former cypress pond and pinewoods that have been flooded because of beaver dams on the neighboring property. It is now an excellent wading bird roosting site. (Wilson Baker conservatively estimated 1100 birds arrived one night last year.)
We will meet at Granddaddy’s Restaurant parking lot at 2128 Smith Avenue in Thomasville, GA 31792 at 3:00 PM and carpool to the Jinright’s Boston farm. They will take us out through the woods on a hayride to a viewing site by the rookery, where we will have a glass of wine or other refreshments while we wait for the birds to arrive. Dress for the weather; we will be out in the open. Bring binoculars, spotting scopes, cameras and bug spray. We will be out until dusk. After watching the birds settle in, we will return to Thomasville and those who wish to have dinner together may eat at Granddaddy’s or elsewhere.
We thank Betty and Robert and their family for another unique opportunity to visit their property to see this magnificent spectacle and raise much appreciated funds for Birdsong. Bring binoculars, spotting scopes and insect repellent.
Cost: $25 per person. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Please call 1-800-953-2473 or you may email us at bird...@birdsongnaturecenter.org to reserve a space by noon on Thursday, May 2nd.
UPDATE: Betty Jinright called to let us know that the White Ibis in the cypress pond at the Jinright family farm are now courting and nesting! She and her husband Robert have found a new vantage point for us at the west side of the pond where we can view the birds at closer range and with the sun at our backs. Although we sent out the program description as below in the recent newsletter (please read for more information) activity in the pond has changed, and Betty now recommends the following change in plans:
She says that the birds are very busy and appear to be coming and going all day now that they are nesting, and are not coming in as before in such huge V's before dusk. So we can go earlier, and anyone who wishes to stay until dusk is welcome to do so.
RESERVATIONS, PLEASE. Please call to make reservations for your space on the hay wagon by noon on Thursday, May 2nd. Wear field clothes and bring bug spray. Spotting scopes are welcome! Bring binoculars, field guides, and cameras.
We will ride out to our viewing area and enjoy a glass of wine and other refreshments while viewing the nesting activities of White Ibis, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and other birds in this amazing rookery. You may bring your own favorite refreshments.
When you call, please be sure to leave your cell phone number. We plan to leave right at 3:00 and caravan to the Jinright property in Boston. Please phone in your reservation so we may provide you with any additional last minute updates: 1-800-953-2473 or 1-229-377-4408.
We hope to see you next Saturday! The cost is $25 per person.
