Why Should Olympians’ Hard work be Penalized?

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/story/2012-08-13/medal-tax-Mary-Bono-Mack/57040222/1

Main Idea: Taxing our Olympians is a shame whenever they are the ones bringing our country together as one and bringing pride to our nation. “Let’s not put a tax on being the best…”

How is it fair to tax our most hard working citizens, our Olympians, for simply winning a Gold? They work intensely for months, put in long days, and never stop trying to the reach the top, like any working resident of the US. But the only difference is that they are athletes. Personally, I don’t think success should be punished by taxing them for winning. Ideally, these athletes don’t “need” a tax break, but the basic idea of it is that the government is penalizing these Olympians for succeeding. The Olympics are in opportunity to take pride in our great nation, and admire our achievement.  The Games pull us all together as one, and that is something quite special. In my eyes, that is not fair to tax these people who represent the USA in such a positive manner. I agree whole-heartedly with what Mary Bono is saying in this article. At the end of Bono’s article, she says “let's not put a tax on being the best in the world.” After all, one should not be punished to bring our nation home a Gold.

I agree with you Cara, i don't think the oOlympians should be penalized for being the best athletes in the world. Bono did make a good point about saying that Michael Phelps probably doesn't need a tax break, however the olympians who, say, win only one gold metal are the ones who don't need to be paying taxes. The government is just looking for a way they can always get more money. And for what? To blow $822,000? On something stupid that doesn't even matter and doesn't help anyone. I can see if the government was going to use their money towards helping other kids and people who want to go to the olympics but cant afford it, kind of like a charity. That would be a good use for the Olympian taxes. But this is like how colleges make their admission thousands and thousands of dollars. There are so many kids who can not afford college but deserve to go to a great school because they are academically advanced. But when our world makes them take out loans upon loans and work every second they are not in school, it takes away from all the hard work they do. Why penalize the people who work the hardest. Olympians should get a tax free break, seeing as though they are the actual best and hardest working people, in the world.
