Bonjour!

For the past 3-4 years, I've shown the "Petit Nicolas" movie to my French 2's, as their first movie to actually "study".  I've followed the Film Aerobics study guide, added a few things of my own, and given them a PN story to read shortly afterwards.

Last year I learned that the middle school teacher in our feeder school has started showing the film in 8th grade, so.....I now have a big hole in my year's plans.

I have other movies I love, but they are mostly all part of a more far reaching scope connected to heavier topics, and for 2's I wanted something light and airy. I'm a bit at a loss as to what to replace PN with.

Anyone have a suggestion? I use the Petit Prince sequel in 4, after they have discussed the book, so that is already on my radar.

Merci!
-Lucy

My kids love Panique au Village, it's silly but ties in with the entertainment chapter.

In 8th grade, I've been showing for  three years Comme un chef in early November. The students LOVE it. here is the trailer of Le Chef (English translation, so to speak)
If you need to go with it, I can send you the material I customized from an already existing 'dossier pédagogique'.

Of course, Les Choristes is also a possibility  (I do it in Late April and created material as well (oriented on reflexive verbs)
Bad trailer but you'll got the idea if you do not know it already : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVtJgU6WTj8

I've been showing La Boum for years (and years!) because despite it's 'oldness', the students LOVE it and it's interesting to show them that many French movies do not end up with a clear resolution. Even if I say that at the start of the movie, they are completely puzzled with the end! Always fun! Unfortunately it's difficult to find with English subtitles. I have two CD burned from TV5 years ago and the non official streaming versions do not have good subtitles. But you may be lucky. at some point, Films Aerobics were selling it, I don't know if they still do.

My colleague in French II does Monsieur Lazar which is québécois. Here is the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUXzWQiqZoM
She also shows La Famille Belier (one scene to be skipped for American audience) but success for sure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1fbTpzWjtU

Please, colleagues, I'm always eager to find new movies, especially for younger students. There are plenty but there is always something that I does not like in it. Please advice.

Les choristes!  My students love it!  My colleague created a study guide which lists the characters and they have to identify who is who in the film.  Beautiful story and the music is formidable!!

Hi Cat,

Is it possible to have it as well please?

There’s an old one and it’s an animation which is Princes et Princesses, it’s several stories and the last one is excellent to learn animals, and to talk about genders as an extension to it.
The stories are not very long and you can choose which story to show. It’s excellent when you have a shorter period with a class, you can just use one and work the vocab/tenses with them. The stories and the format might seem childish at the beginning but students usually get on with it after a few minutes.
Les Contes d’Hiver and others are sequels as well from Michel Ocelot. I wouldn’t show all of them to an American audience but they can be helpful.

Passez une bonne journée!

In French 2, I show Tomboy in the first semester. It ties in nicely with our unit on identity. I used to show Mondo, but I can't find it on DVD or Amazon/Netflix. I'm still looking for a replacement to show towards the end of the year that would tie in with our themes.

I show M. Lazhar in my Jr/Sr elective every other year. It's a pretty heavy film with a teacher's committing suicide in the very beginning of the film. It's not a film I would show to my French 2 students.

Tomboy est un film super mais notre école fait tellement de choses autour de l'identité que je ne sais pas si je dois ajouter 'ma pierre à l'édifice'.
