I am looking for ideas on how to successfully deliver curriculum to a combined class with level 3 and 4AP students while remaining faithful to both curricula. Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried many different methods from a 2 year rotation of the level 3 and 4 books (the 3 students struggled with the AP books) to alternating my attention to either group while keeping the two curricula separate yet combining certain activities such as film study. I am open to any and all ideas, as it seems I will be teaching this combination for years to come. Due to low enrollment they will not separate the two. I might also have to teach a level 1 and 2 combination, so any thoughts on how to successfully navigate those waters would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Andi, I use the level 3 book alternating the first and second half of the book (t'es branché ).AP students do independent assignments as additional homework which are turned in every 2-3 weeks and are specifically tied to the AP exam (essay, email, etc). This way the class is not split during instructional time.

As we get closer to the AP exam the AP students are not required to take unit exams but use that time to take AP practice exams.

Sometimes I give Fr. 3 reading and grammar packets that they can finish in class while the AP students take additional practice exams.

During quizzes, I meet individually with AP students to practice the conversation and 2 minute presentation.

Hope this helps! I know many of us teach combo classes.

Ciao,

If your students have their own computers/Ipads and headphones/earbuds, they can listen and watch videos on tv5monde 7 Jours Sur La Planète  http://enseigner.tv5monde.com/collection/7-jours-sur-la-planete

They need listening practice using authentic sources, so this fits the bill.  There are also quizzes they can take (and the videos have scripts they can read if need be).

They should also report on a current event and give their opinion, perhaps using sources they can find.  Again, this is needed for supporting evidence in the written portion of the AP Exam.

Hi! I teach AP in combination with a culture class (CCC - culture, cinema and conversation) geared for students not taking the AP. These CCC students can be in level 3 or 4. I have an A and a B version of the course to avoid repetition for those taking it twice. For example in the A year, I focus on education and school for La Vie Contemporaine and in the B year I focus on CVs and job interviews.

I use the AP themes for everyone but have separate assignments and rubrics for the two classes.

All students pick a francophone country other than France for which they become "experts". So no matter what subject we are covering, the students will research in their chosen country as well.

I have AP students give persuasive presentations and the other students focus more on the culture or an area of their interest within the theme. For example, when studying beauty and esthetics this year we focused on food. So the CCC students had to choose two films that demonstrated the art and beauty of French cuisine and present it to the class. The AP students had to present the art/beauty in food but in a deeper way - linking memories with smells and traditional cooking; the art of politics and cooking; etc.

All students have the same vocabulary quizzes but not always the same grammar quizzes. The CCC unit tests differ from the AP tests in that AP always has either an email or a persuasive essay or other type of AP exam-type activity. But the general content is the same.

I hope that helps!

I have this same problem for the first time next year.  I think I am going to teach 3 of the 6 AP Themes next year, and mix in some grammar topics (which will be review for the APs and new for the 3s) and a novel.  Then the following year, I will teach the other 3 themes.  With the articles that are too difficult for the 3s, I am going to try to find easier articles on similar topics for them.  Bonne chance!

Hi Kyra,
What novel are you thinking of doing with your AP students?

Thanks,
