#APARN 2024 — Art as Research: Methods for Synthetic Reasoning

Hosted by The Faculty of Creative Media (MMU) in Cyberjaya Malaysia: https://creative.mmu.edu.my

Wednesday 12th – Thursday 13th June 2024

http://aparn.net

The Asia Pacific Artistic Research Network (APARN) Special Interest Group of the Society for Artistic Research invites proposals for presentations at its upcoming 2024 symposium, Art as Research: Methods for Synthetic Reasoning.

The symposium aims to explore how we create order and meaning from the world around us, encompassing both passive and active forms of reasoning. We invite proposals that explore how art can generate new knowledge, challenge dominant narratives, and envision a better future by engaging with synthetic reasoning methodologies, where the truth of propositions emerges from their interaction with the world and the generation of novel properties through philosophical simulations (artworks).  With this focus, we invite proposals from diverse voices and perspectives, particularly from the Asia Pacific region, to share innovative research and practice, foster critical dialogue and collaboration, and especially explore the transformative potential of Artistic Research x Technology in creating liveable futures.

Proposals are invited on topics that engage with:

  • Synthetic reasoning methodologies: How can artistic research practices utilize synthetic reasoning to generate new knowledge and understanding?
  • Emergent properties in art and technology: How do collaborations between art and technology produce unforeseen outcomes and possibilities?
  • Art as a site for critical inquiry: How can art challenge and reframe dominant narratives surrounding colonialism, capitalism, and the climate crisis?
  • Envisioning a better future: How can art and technology collaborations contribute to building more just and sustainable futures?

In addition to the above, we also hope to receive proposals engaging related themes such as : Cybernetics & Alien Intelligences, Sensations, Meaning & Existence, Time, Memory & Extinction, Immersion & Healing, Life & Afterlife, Coexistence, Autopoiesis, Unstable Identities, Virtual Bodies, Algorithms & Economies of Attention, Spirituality After Technology, Exploited Landscapes.

We encourage submissions from diverse voices and perspectives, particularly from the Asia Pacific region. The call is open to both those based in the Asia Pacific region and those outside with an interest in the region.

We are seeking proposals from (but not limited to):

Artistic Researchers, Researchers, Curators, Engineers, Scientists, Computer scientists, Programmers, Interface designers, Designers, Architects, Philosophers, Artists, Cultural workers, Scholars, Academicians, Industry Practitioners, Activists, Performers, and Collectives

with a focus on collaborations at the intersection of art and advanced technology.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit a 300-word abstract (including title) and a short biography (100 words) by April 12 at the APARN website - http://aparn.net

All presentations will be 15 minutes plus 5 minutes Q&A, and creative formats are encouraged. A separate track will allow participation by Zoom.

Proposals will be selected by a committee of peers based on their originality, clarity, relevance to the symposium theme, and potential to contribute to a stimulating and diverse intellectual exchange. Acceptances will be notified by April 18 2024.

Publication

Academic papers from the event can be peer reviewed for potential publication in an issue of the International Journal of Creative Multimedia.

All #APARN2024 presenters will also have the opportunity to publish their presentation in the APARN channel in the Journal for Artistic Research (these are editorially reviewed but not peer reviewed).
