Hello 2nd Grade Colleagues:

I'm trying to decide on a play for my 2nd grade class.  I have many to choose from but I wanted to see what stories they really connected with.  Last Friday I told them that we would soon start working on our class play and almost unanimously they all said "Foxboy?".  Have any of you seen a play for Foxboy?  Or anyone want to collaborate on writing one (Lisa Archer and I did some collaboration on the play for Puck the Gnome last year with great success).
I won't be traveling to the conference this week since I attended the Waldorf public schools conference in January, so sorry to miss seeing some of you in person.
Also - I have some Foxboy stories written out if anyone wants them - let me know.
Happy February Break!

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”   ~Marianne Williamson

Giulie n All,
I love this idea.  My class has loved the Fox Boy stories this year (from Indian Tales, not the actual book Fox Boy [a little leud]). I have yet to choose a play for this year, so I am interested in creating a play out of those stories.  It is a bit daunting, as it is such a long and wandering story.  It will be challenging to honor the nature of the tales and still have a clear storyline.  Yea...even thinking about what the challenge or who the antagonist would be is daunting.  I'll think about it.

Also, in class we focused on the Cocoon Man creation story that Tsimu the wolf tells Fox and his family near the end of the book.  I told the story and the children acted it out.  They has such a great time and it really met our combined 2nd/3rd grade class (Native American/Creation=).  I would also be interested in writing a play for that story.

Aloha,
Todd

Hi Todd - thanks for your interest!  I am thinking that if I really write this it will follow the math story.  I probably won't include Turtle Old Man and the Flint People.  I did not get to the Cocoon People story - basically I started with the beginning and then went on to describe the stone collecting and then later the animals and the times tables.  But I think if we share bits and pieces with each other it could help with ideas.
Last year when Lisa and I worked on the Puck the Gnome play (she did the lion's share - excellent playwright!) we were also faced with how to put together a first grade-sized play with such a long and complicated story.  We ended up leaving out a lot - but it worked well anyway.
What attracts me most to doing this (besides the enthusiasm of my class) is all the Native American songs we already know that could be woven into the play.
Here's what I've got so far - very little but maybe if I keep at it all week I'll have something....

Thanks Giulie for your kind words about our collaboration last year on Puck the Gnome. This year I am not sure what I will be doing for a class play - I did not really connect with the Foxboy story so am looking for other ideas. Right now the class is really loving the King of Ireland's Son, but that seems too daunting to make into a play. Does anyone have any other suggestions about what they will be doing? Or has anyone ever seen a play about about the King of Ireland's Son? Thanks and looking forward to seeing what you come up with for Fox Boy.

  -Lisa

Lisa, I just finished the play of king of Ireland's son, through to the kois's final task for the enchanter of the back black lands. You can do it. I found all the resources I needed from the book 25 plays or maybe it was from the resource 'plays for the lower grades'. In at RSC but when I get back to school, I would be happy to find it for you. Hi Lisa - My colleague Rachelle Coleman put on King of Ireland's Son a couple of years ago and it was one of the best 2nd grade plays that I have seen.  I could ask her for it if you like.
Are you reading or telling King of Ireland's Son?  I don't forsee having time to make it a main lesson story, but was thinking I'd read it as a chapter book after we finish the one we're on now.   There are just too many wonderful stories this year!
My previous 2nd grade didn't really connect to Foxboy but this class definitely does.  Maybe part of it is how much they love math.

Thanks Christina - I'd love to have copy of the play when you get back from RSC (I wonder if it is the same one Giuilie as your colleague did - can you find out because if not I'd love to see both versions as I will probably adapt it anyway for my class).

The children really love the story - I am telling it as a main lesson story (which does take a while - going on 6 weeks now, but really seems to be meeting this class so although there are so many other good stories to tell, I'm glad I started with this one). With my last class I read the story to them as a chapter book at other times, and it did not have quite the impact on them. I'm not sure if it was in the reading or just that they did not connect to it like this class does. It might also be because this time I read the article by Joep Eikenboom in the appendices of Foundations of the Extra lesson that talks about the significance of this story as it relates to the development of the various bodies in the human being, so I am holding those ideas as I tell it. If you haven't read that article, I'd highly suggest reading it before telling this story.

-Lisa

Giulie,
I just looked over your start of the foxboy play.  I'm off to my studies now but will work on the play this weekend.

Lisa and friends,

I used the play for King of Ireland's Son from the play book, 'more plays for the lower and middle school' from 'aids to English teachers in Waldorf schools'. If you don't have it, I will be glad to fax it to you or your school.

Much love, dear colleagues,

Thanks Christina
-My fax number at the school is:   520-325-9883

I asked around today at my school and no one seemed to have the book. The third grade teacher said she would have loved to have had a play about the King of Ireland's Son last year since her class loved the story as well so I'll be sure to add it to our shared resources.

Hi Christina,

My class also loved The King of Ireland's Son and I am wondering if you would be willing to send the script to me as well, I haven't been able to find it in a book. If the script looks like it would work with my group I would love to do it!  I had been considering writing a play based on the Jataka Tale The Monkey King but have hit a couple of blocks.

If it is not too much trouble, I would love a copy.
With warmth and thanks!
-Kim
