Dear Colleagues:
I decided to sign up for Eugene Schwarz' "half-time webinar" and I
must say it was well worth the $25. The webinar is intended for
teachers in the southern hemisphere who are half-way through their
school year, but it is completely appropriate for the beginning of the
year in the northern hemisphere, too. I gleaned some real gems from it
and will be listening to it again (you get it for one month). One of
the gems was about the importance of teaching the times tables in 1st
grade, making sure that they are solid on 2s, 5s and 10s by the end of
1st grade. He talked about how there are windows of learning
opportunity for the children and the window closes by the end of 3rd
grade. Speaking as someone who just finished with a 3rd grade, I can
tell you that it does become harder for them to learn times tables
through movement and rhythm. He also had some very interesting things
to say about the windows of opportunity for reading (a big one opens
up in 6th grade!).
He also has much to say about parent work that I found excellent -
particularly that the MOST important work that you do in 1st - 3rd
grade is with the parents, because you have karma with the parents
during that time.
I'll continue to take notes about what I listen to and share that with
you all - but I highly recommend taking the webinar if you have time
(it'll take a few hours to listen to it all). Here's the link:
