Hi All - I want to suggest a book to you all that I started using last year when I was teaching 3rd grade and that I'm happy to have to help me with math in 1st grade this year.  It is an old book from the 70s called Childcraft Mathmagic.  Here's a link to it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Mathemagic-1978-Childcraft-Annual-Nault/dp/B000O3QACU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1311602095&sr=8-7
The book includes quality of numbers stories, history of counting (plus a story) and shapes stories.  There are lots of resources in it for future grades, too - I found quite a lot that helped me in 3rd grade and would have been useful when I taught 2nd grade.  I highly  recommend buying a copy of this if you can!
Best,
Giulie

“....We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”   ~Marianne Williamson

Hey - in case Amazon sells out of the Mathemagic books (there were only a few used ones when I checked) you can try this resource:  http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?qwork=14348042&keyword=mathemagic&matches=36&cm_sp=works*listing*buyused
Good luck!
