So as I'm working on improving the project visibility and development setup,
I am also starting to consider adding a forum for non-developers.

Developers tends to like mailing list more than forums, so I'm not sure if migrating dev discussion to a forum would be helpful.

Current forum software is not really good these days, they are buggy, with their own markup language, and are hard to read on smartphones.
Now, there is some new initiatives to fix this and I'm considering setting up one of them.

I'm looking at http://discourse.org which is very knew and made by some people that started the stackexchange.com websites, which is a good argument to say it will work nicely.
So far I'm almost convinced but I'll need to setup one see how it goes.

What I fear is that the lack of pure email interface might be a problem for some devs, which is why I consider only setting up a forum for users, not developers.
Feedback are welcome on this point.

Another point that I'd like to have feedback about is when to open the forum.
At the moment, AOSL 1.0 and AOS Web Player 0.1 are usable but only for coders willing to digg into the code.
So I'm thinking it is not necessary to open the forum until AOS Designer 0.1 is released.

What do you think?

Hi guys,

Discourse looks nice. Alternatively, you might consider http://vanillaforums.org/ which has a wysiwyg post editor that generates html, and a lot of addons for specific purposes.

Github has its own issue tracker which can be used for disussion. The good thing is that it is well integrated with git vcs and that is the key point of sw dev I believe.

I had very bad experiences with vanillaforums, mainly because it's too simple and is not appropriate for non-techie users.

The issue tracker is a totally separate thing, yes there can be discussions but only on issues or tech related.
The main goal of the forum would be for end-user discussion and feedback.

Would it mind anyone if I setup a forum for both users (non-developers) and developers?

The forum (if I use Discourse or anything else) would not allow mailing-list style but I don't know if it's annoying for the devs around here.

I think I'll just install the forum but still keep this group open for some time.

We'll see how it goes.

Discourse isn't really ready to be installed in a clean way on a server but it should be updated soon for this.

I believe a stable version will be available once I finish updating AOSL documentation, or worse case once I publish a initial version of AOS Designer.

So I'll postpone installing a forum until then.

I've seen several developers using Discourse without any apparent problem once installed.

I will try to setup one during the coming weekend so that we can have a better forum.

I managed to install Discourse using Bitnami, as an experiment: http://forum.artofsequence.org

However I'm not happy with this solution (how I installed it) because there is apparently no easy way to upgrade discourse with the bitnami package.
There are other problems I'm pointing to the discourse people.

I will try another way to install it later, as I attempted to do this cleanly several time last time without success.
Meanwhile, consider the current install experimental and feel free to play with it, knowing I will delete it and recreate it later.
