SEMINAR BLURB:

A CONVERSATION ON:

“SELF-CARE – AN ETHICAL RESPONSE FOR COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROVIDERS

Programme:

Providers of Community Education deliver a genre of education targeted
at those who experience disadvantage. By its nature, Community
Education is an education that is holistic, informal and
transformative as it empowers both individuals and communities in
personal and social change.

However, working in a constant environment of uncertainty, these same
providers struggle to maintain their service. Now, more than ever, it
is critical that self-care is not perceived as a luxury but as an
ethical responsibility.

Aim:

The central aim of this seminar is to offer an opportunity to
providers to reflect on their ethical response to their Self-Care.

Objective:

This ‘conversation’ will cover topics which will facilitate
participants to identify the spirituality of self-care in relation to
its:

• Psychological and social dimensions

And will:

• Focus on spirituality as an integral part of human experience and
essential to educational programmes.

Outcome:

By acknowledging participants’ need for self-care, this seminar takes
seriously the role community education providers’ have in addressing
personal and community disadvantage and in so doing not only
celebrates their work but also Community Education as a legitimate
form of learning.

Facilitator:

Prof. Jack Finnegan is a Salesian priest, psychotherapist, writer and
lecturer on contemporary spirituality at Milltown Institute of
Theology and Philosophy in Dublin. His most recent book The Audacity
of Spirit was published by Veritas Publications.
