JGD Dear All,

I was (and am constantly!) very curious about gaining small little insights into the traditions and practices in all religions.

This time I was researching on the practice of Rudra Pooja, and it is an amazing science.

Sharing with you all: My take on Rudra Pooja, "Never Ever Miss it in any lifetime, during the Shravan Mass". Take this Sankalpa.

Importance of Rudram

Rudra Pooja is an ancient practice that has been followed in India since time immemorial. Rudra means "Shiva" the Benovelent, the Destroyer of evil.Pooja means "that which is born out of fullness".Through this Pooja one can aim for inner peace and fulfillment.
In this Pooja Lord Shiva is worshipped in his Rudra form, is hailed by all vedic scriptures as one of the greatest Pooja's to remove all evils, to attain all desires and for all round prosperity. The Astrology scriptures have repeatedly prescribed this as a remedy for several planetary doshas.
As per ancient texts when Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Sri Rama, Lord established,Shiva Lingam at Rameshwaram before crossing the sea. He performed Rudrabhishek to express his devotion towards Lord Siva. This Pooja, where Lord Shiva is worshiped in His Rudra form, is hailed by all Vedic scriptures as one of the greatest Poojas to remove all evils, to attain all desires and for all round prosperity and peace.
In this Pooja after the traditional Ganesha Pooja, Kalasha sthapana etc, the Shiva Linga sthapana is done. Then Laghunyasa is recited. The Shivopasana mantra and the 108 names of Lord Shiva are recited. Then Sri Rudram (chapter 16 & 18 of Yajur Veda) is recited and the Shiva Linga abhishekam is done with the prescribed 11 ingredients.
It is an abhishek /puja performed for Lord Shiva and it is very auspicious to perform In this puja Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Linga or Lingam and abhishek is performed with different articles like flowers, belpatra, milk, coconut water, honey, curd sugarcane juice etc.

Why do Rudra Pooja - The world is a play of energy, negative and positive. When we pray to Shiva – the Lord of transformation; the entire negative energy around us in form of disease, depression, and unhappiness gets transformed into peace, prosperity and joy. Peace around us, in the mind, body and soul.

Rudrabhishekam is believed to be a very good Homam performed with powerful mantras and it fulfills all the wishes of the person who gets it performed. This Homam bestows prosperity, fulfillment of all desires, it removes negativity, cut off the negative karma and give all round happiness in life. The Sri Rudram identifies 346 desires of human beings to be fulfilled to have a peaceful daily life and invokes Lord Rudra to fulfill all of them.

Whether you want peace or prosperity, progeny or progress in profession, health or wealth the Rudrabhishekam Pooja is the ideal one. It will be done in your name and with your sankalpa, i.e., the specific purpose for which you are getting the pooja performed.
The Sri Rudram occurs in Krishna Yajur Veda in the Samhitha . This mellifluous prayer to Rudra has two parts-the Namakam (verses ending with Nama) and the Chamakam (Verses ending with Cha May).
While Namakam is a prayer to Rudra to forget about his avenging fierce, fearful and horrendous form and turn himself into a peaceful form and do good to us, Chamakam on the other hand lists out the blessings to be got from a prayer to Rudra and prays Him to regulate and bless our life for a moment forgetting his anger.

How is the Pooja Performed - This pooja is performed with a crystal “linga”. Each ancient mantra that is chanted gets absorbed in specific materials like curd, milk, ghee, honey etc. This is then offered to Shiva with reverence, love and gratitude. Specially trained Pandits and Veda students from our ashram in Bangalore perform this special pooja. The chanting of the mantras is so pure and meditative that it takes us to a different plane.

There are Several meanings to the word Rudra
He destroys the sorrows of the world (Rudra). In the form of Speech, brings out the importance of the meaning of words i.e. (Rudra). In the name of OM, he makes one to realize him. In the form truth he enters humans. He is granter of praana (life). He is even capable of driving away hat Shakti (energy).
