Responsibilities:
Les Schwab Warehouse Center, Inc. (Les Schwab) has an unqualified reputation of having the best automotive retail tire stores in the western United States. Because of their management philosophy and working environment they have a very loyal and dedicated work force, with negligible turnover. Countless business schools and management consultants hold the company as the best example of creative innovation in retailing since the founding of J.C. Penny.
The company is headquartered in Prineville, a small community in central Oregon. The area is renowned for its excellent out-of-doors activities including several highly regarded golf courses, Mount Bachelor skiing, lakes, and bountiful national forest properties which can be used for hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. It seldom rains in this region of Oregon.
Today the firm is near the billion-dollar revenue level and has 302 stores situated throughout the Northwest. Their service approach is unequaled in the region (Les Schwab once said 'All tires are round and black with a hole in 'em, all we have to sell is service').
The company recently invested more than twenty million dollars upgrading computing and network hardware and software. The person we seek will play a major role in assuring the LAN, WAN and Telecom systems are sustained and support this growth.
This position will report to the Director of IS.
The Information Systems organization today has 86 employees structured into Programming Services, LAN/WAN/Telecom Services, and AS400 and Store Support. The LAN/WAN/Telecom Services team currently has 84 employees. The infrastructure consists of three main AS400 systems at corporate offices and AS400 Model 170's in all 302 stores. Stores are connected via a satellite based WAN, and the company utilizes Novell GroupWise and Cisco equipment in its LAN environment. There are approximately 500 users. The company has standardized phones to the G3I Lucent system and utilizes Nortel CICS and MICS.
The key role of this person will be to assure that the LAN/WAN/Telecom Services department works closely with store management, Programming Services, and AS400 and Store Support teams to plan for, develop and sustain data and voice communication systems which enable continued service excellence to customers as the company doubles in size in the near term.
Keeps up-to-date on technical and process developments and recommends for integration into Les Schwab as appropriate. Plans, manages and maintains all components of the Les Schwab networking services, including hardware and software selection and procurement. Manages telecommunications vendors including local and long distance contracts; responsible for providing quality telecommunications service to company retail locations by providing properly maintained equipment and training.
Manages operation and maintenance of the LAN, including work order generation, moves, adds, changes, and security.

Qualifications:
Will come from an information systems networking environment where they are recognized for their strong penchant for the best level of customer and user service possible (lots of 'kudos' from the users).
Significant success in managing multiple complex projects in a high demand environment.
Five to eight years of related experience including data networking, computer operations, and telecommunications; at least three years in a supervisory role.
Strong personnel, leadership, employee development and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to
communicate technical concepts to non-technical people.
Solid understanding of business concepts and practices as well as long-term
strategic planning skills.
Bachelor's degree preferably in a technical/computer related field.
Experience in a multi-site retail, wholesale or logistics industry company highly desirable.
Experience managing networks utilizing Novell and Cisco products.
