Friends,
This (below) seems to be the earliest email I have on the Hegel reading group. If so, we must have started on 2 Sept 2016...?

Nice.

Dear friends,

This is just to say it was very enjoyable to talk about Hegel yesterday, and I hope we can continue on such topics in the future.  I am hoping we can stick to specific readings of Hegel for the next 5-6 readings at least, moving to higher levels of complexity, and dipping into the main text when we are able.  At the same time, we should anchor our surroundings in the actual situation which drives us to spend this time on philosophy.

I re-went through four or five of the readings that I have done, and found the following one best suited for both self-study and discussion.

Robert Stern (2006). Hegel's doppelsatz: an neutral reading.  Journal of the History of Philosophy, vol. 44, no. 2 (2006) 235–66

It is an interesting reading of the Philosophy of Right, yet has implications for his philosophy through out, and for our thinking our reality, actuality, etc.  Plus all the forms of reality we see around us...

I will take responsibility to lead the discussion with a small presentation (about 20 minutes) and his time I will try to engage with the Stern text rather than to generally talk about Hegel's project. I hope others will read the text too so that we can actually conduct a discussion.

After this in the following month's session, we can look at a smaller text on the same subject from a book by Rocio Zambrana (2015), which I have copied into Word from my Kindle volume.  May be approach a Zizek text after that -- I feel he is too jumpy right now for the group in his best introductory essay on Hegel in the volume The Ticklish Subject.

How does Friday evening 4:00 pm 7th October sound?

Best
Srivats

...the truth is not to be held to stand on the other side as an immovable lifeless positive element. Appearance is the process of arising into being and passing away again, a process that itself does not arise and does not pass away, but is per se, and constitutes reality and the life-movement of truth. The truth is thus the bacchanalian revel, where not a member is sober...
