797. Thus, what in religion was a content in the mode of representation of another, is at this point (at the beginning of absolute knowing) a content which the self itself produces. "The concept is the bond that makes the content the Self's own doing" (316). This self which acts is aware of both all essentiality (abstract knowing, laws, rules, universal truths) and all being-there,or actuality as it exists (situations, specifics, needs of the moment); it is "the knowledge of this subject as the substance and of the substance as this knowledge of its doing". Hegel says we (Hegelian readers) have added only two things to this idea (so far). One, the assemblage moments (aspects, parts, shapes, balancing forces) that in principle, and insofar as they are able and within their limits, manifest the entirety of spirit. Two, we have added the firm grasp on the concept as it logically is (as that which makes the content the self's own doing), thus locating in this concept all the shapes that have arisen as shapes or patterns of consciousness thus far.

There is only one solution if old age is not to be an absurd parody of our former life, and that is to go on pursuing ends that give our existence a meaning – devotion to individuals, to groups or to causes, social, political, intellectual or creative work … in old age we should wish still to have passions strong enough to prevent us turning in on ourselves. One’s life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation, compassion. - Simone de Beauvoir
